help with spring valve seat manufacture, + steel sourcing S.W. Sydney
hi , i,m rebuilding my fiat tractor engine at this time. i am in the reassemble phase. i,m going to send the head off to get decked and vacuum tested (for valve sealing) . i pulled all the valves out and lapped them in good. then i took the head to pressure clean , and during this step , i,ve lost a valve spring seat. for those unaware , the valve spring sits on a hard seat, as opposed to the spring sitting on cast iron (and wearing it out). well, stupid, studip me has gone and lost one seat. i,ve looked and looked, but i can,t find it. very frustrating to say the least. fiat suppliers don,t stock this any more, its a 1976 model.
the silver lining is that i get to use my hercus lathe and make something up.
i enjoy learning new things (machining hard steel).
i,m inexperienced in this type of steel selection, and i think i will need a 4130 or 4140 steel or other?, however i would like recommendations and opinions please. the steel needs to be tough and machinable. i don,t think mild steel is tough enough, i can do better!
does anybody know where i can get this special steel stock? in S.W. Sydney or wollongong? ive used southern steel at milperra many times , not sure if they stock harder steel thou. i only need 150mm to 300mm rod/shaft will do. the seat dimensions are; 36.42mm dia, about 6mm height, and steps down to 3mm , and about 14.25mm hole.
thanks mick

Are you going to harden it when finished?

Can't answer if it is better to or not, probably using 4140 or en36 should be fine.
A supplier in the S/W you may need to search for unless you try the steel store.

Hi Mick, Guys,
As far as I'm aware those spring cups are not hardened ! You could check with a file on the outer edge of one.
As far as loosing one, try waving a magnet around in the general area.
I lost a M6 grub screw into the lawn, no way could I see it in the grass, a magnet found it about three feet away from where I thought it should have been.Best Regards:

Is it just a thin washer approx 1mm or less like used on a lot of aluminium heads, or is it thicker with possibly a profile ie not just flat?
A photo of one of its orphaned siblings would be good

the spring sits on a 3mm section ,similar but much thicker that a car valve spring seat. then it steps up from 3mm , to 6mm inner height. the inner height keeps the spring centralized on the spring seat . it is not flat. the spring is centralized by the washer/seat , that rises INTO the spring, to 6mm . i dont know how to post pictures.
