I know this is not normal cause my other grinder dosnt get this hot...
The power lead is the same as when i got it.
The capacitor works...

The amount of heat produced by the motor will depend upon how efficient it is. Most DE grinders have what is called a 20 minute rating. That is the length of time it should / can be run before it gets too hot. Both my DE grinders will get too hot to hold your hand on after 20 minutes.
Make sure that the centrifugal switch is working properly !Best Regards:

BJ is right, Single Phase grinders do get hot but some get hotter than others. I used to have half a dozen grinders and got rid of all bar the Abbott and Ashby which still gets hot.
Did you test how hot it got before you refurbed it?
It could be the cap - have you got a way of testing the cap - some multimeters have a testing setting but not many cover a wide range of capacitance.

No i didnt really run it before i refurbed it. but now after about 2 min run time it gets really hot to the touch. to the point of uncomfortable.
Ill grab the multimeter out and test the cap and the stator to i remember seeing something on you tube... Ill get back to you all after i get home

Hi Mr GS,
If the cap value is wrong or shorted the motor will get hot very quickly.
DE stands for "Double Ended"
It took me a while before I understood some the abbreviations commonly used !Best Regards:

Hi Bob,
Probably not, though I've played about with motors that have started themselves without the cap even connected and a few where the cap has become very leaky, electrically. I actually remember one that started hissing, even though I turned the power off it was so hot that it still hissed for about a minute after. It still measured close to the correct value when measured some time later.
When I was much much younger, about 10 or 11, various people gave me old radios to play about with. I got great delight from showing my friends what happened to electrolytic capacitors when you connected them the wrong way round. I can still remember the bang, the smell and the big shower of paper and aluminium foil, and the telling off my Dad used to give me !Best Regards:

When I was about the same age I decide that I needed to find out how mum's twin Brush floor polisher worked. One day when my parents went out I took the cover off the polisher and plugged it in and watched it working. I then decided to poke the running motor with a screwdriver. Luckily it had a plastic handle because I must have shorted something active because there was a loud bag and a shower of sparks and it stopped working. I was able to work out I had blown a fuse and as I had seen Dad replace fuses was able to replace the fuse and put the polisher back together and see that it still worked. That kept me away from electric motors for a couple of months until I decided to look inside dads corded drill. Kept the screwdriver out off the way - no dramas. I looked inside most appliances etc but if dad had know this I would have copped a belting.
Luckily my interest in how electrical things work was diverted to engines when a friend of ours gave us an old Vespa scooter to play with. Of course there are plenty of ways to injure ones self with even a scooter. The stupidest thing we did was build a ramp for it at the end of our street to get it airborne. Then we piled on the neighbour hood kids. Fortunately with 6 kids aboard it could only get up to about 40 kph by the time it hit the ramp, kids would be thrown everywhere, lots of laughing and crying - no one got seriously injured but one kid tore his shorts and his mum came down to have words with my mum so the Vespa was not allowed to leave the yard - until mum and dad went out - then we'd ride it about 250m to a bush block and bash around there. Eventually we bent the fame so badly it could not lean over to turn without touching the ground. Of course Dad noticed this and eventually he took it to the tip.

Its finished
Hi all finally finished it and best of all solved the heating problem.
It was a combination of the capacitor and there was a nick somewhere on the stator.
I dont know much about motors so i took it to a mate who knew somone who delt with motors. He did his thing and changed the capacitor and sprayed a red eurathane sealant on a section of the stator.
so far so good it runs and no heat at all. Sorry after 20 min of sharpening drill bits it just feels warm to the touch.
im so happy hereS. i had a spare cable gland which i put on instead of that doggy piece of rubber hose out the back.
I kept the old tag.. call me sentimental but I liked the roughness of the old lable on the new paint job ....anyways everything was still legible on the lable
heres the final photos. thanks guys for all your help and support.
Im already on my second project.
its a RICHARDSON Pedstal Drill Press and Im really looking forward to it.
Keep you guys posted
