Simso Panbrake build
I have started the build of my own Simso 'style' 600mm benchtop panbrake. The pdf plans are floating around this site somewhere, and I'm working my way though them.
I say it's a simso 'style' because I am hoping to take some advice from others about what successes and failures they have had with this design.
I plan to use it for up to 1.6mm sheet across the full width (IIRC this is within its design), but if I can make it to manage thicker section on a shorter width, great.
Open to ideas if you've built one, or have any hints on how to make it stout.
I'm a welding type of guy, not a machinist, And I'm tooled up accordingly... so I am going to outsource the milling and turning operations.
Some initial thoughts on improving the design- open to ideas:
- Bracing straps under the bed and folding bed will be 50mm wide strips of 12mm thick material. Could use up to 20mm if there is a benefit here
- Fingers could also be from 20mm plate machined accordingly- if there is a benefit in doing so.
- Top brace which the fingers bolt to is 100x10mm angle which will be cut down according to the plans.
- Plastic bush in the plans which actuates the finger pressure clamping mech will be turned from steel.
- Bronze bush has been installed on the bending tray hinge - hopefully this firms it up and prevents any slop, plus smoother through its motion.

I believe the top plate could be upgraded as its inevitable that someone will ways want to bend just a little bit thicker than the finger brake was designed for.
I have a bit of 75 x 20 ready to replace the top plate in my unfinished unit.
Perhaps 20mm might be the limit as it getting away from being portable.
I can't see any cons.

You meant the top plate that the fingers clamp down on?
Is this what tends to bend under heavy work?
Looking at the plastic bush that install into the side plates. Plans show a 25mm hole, and bush reduces this to accommodate a 20mm shaft for finger clamping.
Found an oilite bushing which may reduce the need to machine these, and provide a bit of strength in this area.
This is for a 25mm shaft, and 30mm hole in the side plate.

your pic 1. I started off with a 16 mm plate instead of the 12 that's on the plan.
Mines nowhere near finished alas. Making mine to take wider sheet than the plan and thus have beefed up a few bits.
This thread might give the inspiration to drag mine out & do some more on it. Darn work has me busy making up stuff for jobs.Frisky wife, happy life. Then I woke up.
