Can I draw your attention to one of our guys?
https://metalworkforums.com/f65/t203...=grinder+belts
Also i have looked at belts from:
Artisan Supplies
https://www.artisansupplies.com.au/p...brasive-belts/
also a good read on choosing belt grinder belts.
https://www.artisansupplies.com.au/k...-buyers-guide/
and purchased ceramic belts from
Creative Man
https://creativeman.com.au/accessories-3/
Grit size varies with the suppliers.

G'day Paul,
Thanks mate.
I bought my Norton Blaze belts from Gameco Artisan Supplies who ship nationwide but I'm keen to try the 3M Cubitron belts from Weber abrasives.
I haven't actually crowned either of the wheels at this point in time and everything seems to track pretty well. There is a very slight side to side wobble in the coarser belts but this is only minor. I'm going to try the masking tape trick on the tensioner wheel at some point just to see if this makes any difference and if so I might crown it when I machine up the final drive wheel. I was not planning to crown the drive wheel though.
I haven't thought about how to crown the wheel but if I do, I reckon mark the center of where the belt runs on the wheel then machine using the compound by bumping it over a bees dick each way. This is probably not ideal as it's going to be more angular than round but if you machine a bit of a flat in the middle so there's no point it shouldn't be too hard the belts.
Cheers,
Greg.

Thanks Grahame - that second video is a clever, simple idea - poor mans copy lathe...

Jump to about 8.50 for the interesting bit.

Well done Greg, I watched Jeremy's build series on YouTube and intend building one when time permits. Your mods and photos will be very helpful when I do, thanks for going to the trouble of posting your build.

Its a few months down the track now - hows the grinder going Greg?
Anything you'd do differently or improvements/accessories that you've come up with?

Thanks Doug, it's a good design and well worth the effort to build if you're doing serious grinding.
G'day Steve, I haven't used it a lot but Charlie uses it most days grinding both hammers he's forged and knives and he's still happy with it.
I machined up the larger drive wheel (uncrowned) and put a bit of a crown on the tensioner wheel. Crowning the tensioner made bugger all difference as far as I can tell. When I made the tensioner I overshot the bore for one of the bearings by a thou and I suspect the slight side to side belt movement might be due to this. At some point I'll machine a new one but it's pretty low on the list right now.

Nothing new on the attachments front, I came across a really good design for a table which I'll adapt for this machine at some point but again, it won't happen in a hurry.
I don't know if it's the ceramic belts or not but it makes a much bigger mess than the little Multitool linisher used to so the next grinder related job will probably be some sort of box with filtered extraction to minimise the dust distribution.
Cheers,
Greg.

Thanks for the feedback Greg. Great to hear its working out well and that Charlie is still keen.
I sold my old vintage belt sander recently as it just wasn't fitting with everything else in the workshop so currently only have the horrible Ozito combo grinder/sander left. Its massive 240 watts barely copes with removing a burr so definitely planning on buying/building something better.
I don't actually need another project so if I build one it will just be constructed to a proven design - without any R&D or decisions involved!

What size motor is used?
Would you go larger or small if building another one.

I used a 1.5kw (2hp) and it seems about right, probably wouldn’t go any smaller though.
Cheers,
Greg.

I dont want to hijack your thread but I built a 2" x 72" a few years ago out of scrap that was laying around and it is possibly the most used tool in my garage, I love it.
Nothing fancy like the ones you guys have built but its stood the test of time.
