Default Swing gantry for the workshop

I thought more about making a U shaped clevis as DaveJ suggested with a nut for adjustment but the different ways I could think of making it with the materials at hand were all going to look very agricultural.
Quite unusual for me to be concerned about aesthetics - guess I shouldn’t have set a precedence by painting the carriage bits!!

Decided I could live with having to remove the clevis pin to adjust as I could just prop the end of the beam on a ladder.
Since there was a lot of material removal required to machine the first one from 2” round bar I decided to fabricate this one.

Started with a piece of 1-1/4” bar, drilled and tapped one end for M16x2 all-thread, and milled flats on the other end so I could weld on some flat bar to form the clevis.
Screwed the allthread in and tacked it to prevent it unscrewing.

Drilled and tapped a boss to weld into the first piece of tube for the allthread to screw into.

Made up a couple of pins from some old Landrover suspension bolts. Beautiful material to machine.

The whole lot is painted ready to be fitted tomorrow night.

Fitted the tie rod for the lifting arm tonight. Fitted nicely, and easy to adjust.
I put the good solid stepladder under the arm (still supported by the temporary lifting sling tie) and packed it up with a couple of bits of wood until the free end was just slightly above level.
Removed the sling and fitted the new steel tie - pinned it at the top end and then adjusted the lower (outboard) end until the pin slid in nicely. Pulled the blocks of wood and its sitting pretty nicely. Still slightly high, but I'll see what its like after I've fitted the brace to the back side of the post to reduce the flexing under load.
To give you an idea of the post flex, my 100kg applied near the end of the beam (approx 3m from the post) allowed the beam to come down about 50mm at the tie point.

My plan for the post brace is some 40x4 gal flat as a tension brace since I have suitable length bit lying around. The flat will be welded to the post one end, run over a piece of 100x100x5 angle (that forms an "A" shaped strut at the back of the beam attachment point), and have a bit of threaded rod welded to the other end going through a bracket for adjustment.

Hard to get good photos of the new beam tie installed, but here a couple.

Got the back brace for the post done tonight. I’ve run out of silver gal so will paint it another day.
The flat bar is welded to the post at the top and free to slide over the short strut behind the beam mounting point.

Works well - it’s reduced the roughly 50mm flex at about 2m along the beam to less than 10mm (with same 100kg load on the end).
I was reminded how much my out of position welding sucks!

Now just needs some sort of runner/rod for the extension lead to slide on and it will be finished.
