There are obviously a number of members in the forum that use / own a T & C Grinder and it would be good if they could pass on some of their knowledge to members that are starting out with little knowledge and / or incomplete machines. I for one would like to know the accepted method and fixtures needed to sharpen a slitting saw for example.
There is probably a lot of information already on the forum but unfortunately it is lost within post topics and the chance of finding it is slim to say the least. The topic of sharpening is no less important than lathe work or mill work as without sharp tooling a poor quality job is the result. Even links to relevant pages on wheel types, grits, attachments etc would be useful. There are obviously a few guys interested in the topic currently so I can see no reason why a trial grinding section is added, if thats what members want, and if results are not reached to an acceptable level then Grahame can merge it with the 'metalwork general section" End of unpatronised sub section sorted.

Firstly I agree that sharpening is a VIP in MW.

However, using the search term "Sharpening" there are 50 threads with Sharpening in the title across all forums over a period of 12 years - ie about 4 threads per year
Apart from a couple of threads in the welding forum these are all in the "Metalwork General" forum.

By wy of comparison there are several other forums which only have 50 or so threads in them
eg CNC, but this has been since 2016 - so more than 10 posts per year and its a topic that is likely to grow.

Gunsmithing also has about 50 posts in 8 years - if it doesn't pick up it could be living on borrowed time

Jewellery has 24 threads in 14 years, but not much has happened in that forum until about 2016 - probably should have been subsumed back into the MW forum.

The Sheraton Forum has only 7 threads but that is over a period of ~4 months.

I also agree that sharp tools are very important and so sharpening information is essential, but the number of members who could speak authoritatively on sharpening is small. The rest of us (me included) just bodge our way through. I sharpen lathe tools, drill bits, milling cutters and occasionally make things like punch & die sets, but would not feel comfortable posting a 'this is how it is done' thread, because I don't think I have the expertise; I'm still learning. We have had some monumental stouches here over things like sharpening. We may even have had a couple of members walk away after disagreements about whether hand or jig sharpening was better (and more than a few slurs were cast by both sides).

I can't really speak about whether or not new sub forums are needed, as in my time I've advocated for some myself. While it is a neater way to organise things, the search function on the forum is able to pull things up if you search on posts for content rather than by title. Thread materials can wander, so the good stuff could be hidden several pages down. As an example, there is a thread on bandsaws that has a bit about hobbing worm wheels in it.

If information on how to do a specific operation is needed, then ask the question as I suspect more information would be forth coming that way. Even if something was in a grinding sub-forum, lots of members don't search before asking a question so I think we would still have the same issues with questions that were asked a page or two ago as we would if the information was buried elsewhere.

As for sharpening slitting saws, I had a grinder that was set up for sharpening (wood) saw blades, but the method would be the same -
The T&C grinder needs a saucer wheel to fit between the teeth (material is taken off the front of the tooth). The saw is supported so it's spindle axis is vertical (indexed around manually) and the face to be sharpened is simply positioned and some light pressure applied. to get to the next tooth gullet, the saw is pulled out, indexed and the repositioned. The sketch below may perhaps supply some enlightenment.

    Hi Guys,

Part of the problem with sharpening saw blades is that the tooth face angle varies according to the type of material being cut. Occasionally there is a need to alter that angle which changes wheel geometry. Lathe tools are quite straight forward, circular saw blades are not !
