    Default Annular cutter grinding info

    SAM_0583.jpgHello from the old goat.
I have been grinding these cutters for 13 years and always have trouble with clearance on the following tooth. Today I tried to incline the workhead and set the wheel head to 0 deg. Could not get even close to grinding the tooth.
Now I scratch my head. How is it different? The grinder is reset back to how I've done it before and all is good. The newer cheap cutters have more flutes for the diameter in some sizes and grinding the inner facet is a pain. I am having to dress the wheel every 2 cutters.

Have you thought about using a thinner grinding wheel, it may allow you to come in close???

    Default Changing the wheel

    Hello Kryn.
A saucer wheel would have to be thin and only worth a small number of dressings. My knees will shake. This grinder has no wheel hubs so I would lose a bit of a CBN wheel to dressing.
If I can find a cheap CBN saucer wheel will give it a go. So far they have been 2.4mm edge thickness and that rules them out.

    Hi Guys,

I've not a lot of experience here, but a smaller wheel diameter would be needed to avoid hitting the following cutting edge. This problem is made worse when you have smaller cutters with a larger number of teeth.

I would have thought a thin flat wheel would be better suited to that task than a cup wheel, even just a cutoff wheel from an angle grinder

    Default Annular cutter grinding

    Hello from the old goat.
To use a smaller wheel will mean I need to spin it much faster and the T & C grinder is fixed speed. The hougan sharpener uses an electric die grinder and a small CBN wheel. The setup is muchly different.
A cut off wheel has the rong grain for tool grinding as they use regular A not 38A or 32A spec. Also grinding on the side of them is bad practice as it exposes the fibreglass and fragments shoot out.

I think it is still a geometry issue.
