The mill is getting there - new bearings and de-rusted, so things are moving soooo smoothly compared to before...

Nice looking vice, Tuomas.
Another Dawn - this one a 6SP cast steel unit:

The text is smaller like what I saw on the 5SP cast steel unit, notably smaller than what you see on the 5SP/6SP cast semi-steel units - could help in identifying a steel model from a poor photo online.

For those that like their Dawns made this century - here's a review of a 100mm Dawn basic cast semi-steel unit:

Or, basically the same vice with the swivel base:

No restoration involved in those two... and they probably won't need one for some time!

Another couple of nice jobs and an interesting read.
Could you tell me what "cast semi-steel" is?
Being an ex-foundry person I find it an interesting term.

Thanks for that.
Sounds like marketing hype to me. Though it has been along time since the foundry days.

Welllll I didn't get to repainting all of it but I ran out of time before I needed to use it... the mill is alive and working nicely! De-rusted, unseized, replaced bearings and fresh lubricant everywhere. Started making chips out of the nearest offcut I could get my hands on:
Just in time to mill some aluminium extrusions for a 3D printer frame which I need done later in the week.

Nice to hear about the contact from Dawn. Well deserved I’d say.

Started on restoring a GMF 125mm Handy Grinder:
Seems as though the build quality and longevity of this particular unit's design is, ah, rather different to the usual GMF grinders I restore... It's not finished yet, have not had time to reassemble but there's still forty or so photos of the process there.

A mostly done restoration on a smashing Durst 8" bench grinder:
https://motofaction.org/tool-reviews...stralian-made/
And as usual a history article on the company - if anyone has any other Durst tools or some info that isn't shown in the article, please let me know! I have seen a Youtube video from the current owner but am hoping to find some old info that helps date some of these tools. Good photos are also very hard to come by of the plates etc...

Still haven't fully reassembled the grinder but boy is it a nice unit. Has replaced my Abbott and Ashby.

From memory, it had a sticker that proudly said "Graphite Bearings?"
