Almost finished cleaning up a Samsonia Perfect vice... article and history forthcoming, for now here's the before:

I was intending on restoring the disabled-by-previous-owner quick release mechanism but time constraints prevented that. Functionally it's the same as this Dawn design - which I presume was copied off this Parkinson - so it wouldn't be a difficult thing to do for someone so inclined. It's a nice vice, 6" jaws and decently solid.

As seen in the tool gloat thread, I picked up a Taiwanese mill:

It has apparently had minimal use - it feels like it has sat for a long time as everything is stiff and dry. While it works as-is I'm going to pull it down and clean/re-lube everything - this will give me some time to save up for some tooling anyway, what came with it is very drill-oriented (many morse taper drill bits) and I only need this for it's milling capabilities.

Made some progress cleaning up the mill; started the process of cleaning up the column, about a quarter of the way done now. Some of the rust patches were substantial, it's little wonder it didn't like being wound up and down:

Also tidied up the base a little - didn't get as far through the rust as I was planning before painting but I was painting something else and had paint left over so took the opportunity to put some on.

Bearings are on their way, just need to sort out some belts as the existing ones are not supple and have a definite set to them from sitting.

    Pretty big call, isn't it!

Following on from tharindu's Waldown thread, here's what I could find on the twin-spindle impact unit:

Found a clear ad for the manufacturer of the pneumatics and a little about them, but still chasing further info. Certainly a curious piece...

Cleaned up this 125mm Dawn offset vice that came to me in a rather lurid all-over red:

I put up some pics of a Dawn 100L - has anyone got a photo of this decal, or a vice with it still attached?

Got started on this 4L restoration... what is with people going crazy with the bright red spraypaint?

Here's another 4L that was finished, this one a lot rustier:

One thing I'd really like to know is whether the dot between the 4 and the L means that it's an earlier or later model. I have a hunch that it indicates that it's an earlier model, but that's one of the questions I need to dig around in the old catalogues for or to ask Dawn.

I do like these cast steel vices - cleaned up a 5" Dawn, here's how it arrived to me:

The blue came out a little lighter than I was hoping for but it was a darn solid vice. Anyone seen another Dawn with a screw that extended past the far end of the dynamic jaw?

I’m really enjoying seeing your vice restorations - thank you for posting. I have my dads Dawn vice and it has a lot of cuts and gouges in it from use over many years - what is your normal approach to refinishing the surfaces like these?

    thanks
    Ian

Glad to see someone enjoying them! I don't usually cover up the battlescars but I totally get doing it for something special. For minor imperfections across a surface some spray on primer filler and primer surfacer is my go-to, but for deeper things like cuts I'd use filler from a tub.

I always have the urge to use JB weld or Marine Tex to fill in the deeper holes but have never actually had a go at that.

    Another Dawn 150mm. Before:

I always like working on these as they're just such solid pieces of kit and a pleasure to use for heavy duty work.

Another 150mm cast iron Dawn, this one with different castings in the side - I suspect newer:
