Still struggling to find free time during COVID but I did manage to find a stack of data about Dawn from the late 70s, including Siddons' (who owned Dawn at that time) vice sales numbers for some years - updated the '70s section of the history to reflect this:

There's a lot of text - I hope to break it up with some vice pictures and whatnot in time, but for those who like history there might be some interesting reading there about imported vice numbers vs. locally made, etc.

More Dawn stuff - putting some time into figuring out the dates of the various offset vices models:

The OS designator has the smallest year range, and I'd be very keen to hear from anyone who has photos/brochure pictures of an offset cast vice which lacks the patent number cast into it...

Cleaned up a No. 5 cast steel offset Dawn bench vice:

This one had definitely led a hard life, but still had plenty to give.

I needed to polish 40 long rods to make fence to our staircase.
Shorter rods i needed for handrails. Decided to do some simple shaping to them.

Video shows my solution. ( Not monetized video, or active YouTube channel)

Been a little busy with work lately to get many restos done but I managed a Dawn 100mm offset the other day:

Went to Motofaction for a gander....12 pointed sockets etc

12 pointed sockets or ring spanners are a neccessity when working on Borg Warner stuff...they must have invented the 12 pointed bolt...lol, as its used a hell of a lot on their products from Transmissions to Air Conditioning Equipment ...seem to recall they were also used on pumps from their pump division...No, they were not used on the Pony Express horses!!

Good golly that's an old article... I couldn't find it at first but it's still written in PHP where the rest of the website has moved on to straight HTML.

I might go update that somewhat when I have time, and mention 12 point fasteners!

Not much workshop time due to work getting flat out through COVID. I did restore a 6SQ Dawn, though:

Even came with a free Sidchrome Whitworth spanner in place of the OG QR handle.

Just adding to the procession of Dawn restorations!

I have another Dawn No. 10 which has the quick release mechanism, and its worn out, the vice pops open when you tighten it up too hard. So i tracked down another No. 10 with a regular ACME thread so it would be a direct swap onto my bench. Came up very nice! Was in a sorry state when I got it, barely able to crank the handle. Took it back to bare metal with an electrolysis bath and then a few good coats of rust proof paint and lubed everything. Had to get the lathe involved and made a bushing for where the big pin holds the threaded rod in place, and took out all the slop. A very satisfying project.

    Cheers,
    ratters
