Kitchen Island Bar
Hi everyone, following on from a recent topic about paint for aluminium, i thought i would post this topic up to show you my most recent project just completed a week ago.
This is an Island Bar that i built for the kitchen of our brand new Townhouse, the carcase was built from 26mm thick melamine coated plywood, the drawers are metal sided of varying depths, the sides and back of the Bar is clad in Colorbond "Jasper" Mini Orb sheeting, with 40x25x3mm aluminium angles to 4 corners, 25x3mm aluminium flat bars stuck to the front edges of the carcase, and the drawer fronts are cut from a 2400x1200x3mm sheet of milled aluminium.
All the aluminium parts were initially sanded with 80 grit glass paper to get the swirling brushed look, then finished using a quick rub with steel wool to smooth out the surface but retain the brushed effect.
The spray paint that i used on the aluminium parts and on the original black powdercoated handles was "White Knight" satin touch up quick dry Acrylic in Colorbond "Jasper" to match the Mini Orb, 2 coats applied at 18 hour intervals, and the finish on the paint looks just like it has been powdercoated, very happy with the way it worked out.

The aluminium corner angles are riveted to the Mini Orb top and bottom, the flat bars were attached to the edges of the cabinet using 25mm wide Melca double sided tape, and the drawer fronts were initially stuck onto the drawer using the same Melca tape, and secured on each corner using 1/8" Jasper coated rivets.
I am a builder/joiner by trade (now retired) and this is the first time that i have built anything like this using metal and/or aluminium for the final finish over the timber cabinet, usually i would use some kind of Lamiwood, but this time i wanted something more industrial looking, so this is what i came up with.
All the edges of the drawer fronts have been heavily sanded to a curved finish and the corners were rounded off with a file so there are no sharp edges or corners to injure anyone who may bump into them if they are left open.
I have yet to find any 110mm tall adjustable metal or aluminium legs that take my fancy as yet, so the black plastic adjustable ones will have to do until i find new ones.
I have posted 2 photos to show the final finish, and apologies for the not so good photos, i just can't seem to get anything better, to show the true colors, especially the Jasper, which is usually a muddy darkish brown color.
Cheers.
