Bridgeport Clone Fine Feed Handwheel
Hi all,
Hardly ground breaking but it's another (little) step forward to making this mill "complete".
It has been missing a fine quill feed handwheel since I bought it which has been a source of annoyance.
Couldn't bring myself to purchase a plastic one so I re-purposed an alloy handwheel i had in my parts bin. It's probably a little large in diameter, but not by much looking at pics of Lagun milling machines on the net.
I had to bore it out to clean it up and then make an adapter to mate it to the mill and clear the control box.
The adapter is a nice press fit and the hole was reamed to 12.0mm for rather nice sliding fit.
I was going to recess a 6mm cylindrical neodynium magnet to hold it in place when in use but it does not need it.
The handle on the handwheel was cannibalised from a damaged ball crank handle from the table.
I have a replacement for the table waiting...
The forward/reverse pin was also missing so I made a replacement out of some scrap brass. Not totally convinced I like the colour but it works nicely so for now it's staying.
Don't have a suitable knurl for the job so a series of evenly spaced grooves will provide some grip.

Simon.
Your hand wheel doesn't look out of place at all IMHO.
Years ago I had an old flat bed, flat belt lathe that just had the old style 3 balls type winder like what you still get on the table feed on a mill. I hated that with a passion so I rummaged around in the odds and sods/scrap bin at work and found a valve hand wheel that was the right size. machined a bush similar to yours, machined most of the finger indentations off the OD, fitted a handle and fitted to the lathe. Made the old thing heaps better to use but unlike yours, mine still looked like a valve hand wheel

Thanks guys. Sorry for the late reply, I wasn't expecting anymore replies to this thread.
As for the brass forward/reverse plunger, I'll change that out. Last week I received a new clamp style knurl tool so I'll try it out.
