Default Versatile press system to small home workshop

    Hi

    This is my press system.

I tried to design it so that i could use it many ways as possible.

Plans and more info can be found here:

Well done. Definitely a lot of thought gone into that.
A couple of comments from personal experience - definitely not criticism!!
Personally I think I'd find changing jacks a pain and would end up just using the top mounted one 99% of the time.
You may not have the requirement, but for me the ability to put a longer shaft in the press for doing bearings is essential. Using channel on the outside of the uprights rather than RHS inside allows the shaft to pass through.

    Thanks Steve.

For me its 99% i use jack placed down.
I do mostly just bendings, 90% of them are about 100mm wide and 3-5mm thick.

But, when i need to bend thicker or wider parts, then it takes less than a minute to change jacks.

I hardly ever need bigger press. When i changed bearings to car wheels, i did it at my my work. I
do that kind of things only when i have to, for the ones that like to do cars, bigger press is better option.. or two different presses.

    Different tools for different needs.
For me small size was important thing too.

    Tuomas,

What material did you use for the die? Is it simple mild steel or something harder/tougher?

I’ve been wanting to make something similar but assumed you needed fancy steel for the die or it might round over or bend at the tip.

    Its mild steel.

Its about the required force you need to make the bend.

Thicker/harder material with smaller bending radius requires more force, that is what requires harder dies.

I have used those dies over a year now, to bend 3-6mm plates.

And i haven't need to re-shape them. So, i think that mild steel works well enough.
If i need to re-shape them after 2 years in use, i don't keep that bad at all.

So, you can bend mild steel with mild steel dies,
If you don't require very tight bending radius.
