    Default Turbine powered trike

    Hi all,
This is my trike build. This trike is not a ordinary trike build as this trike will be powered by a small turbine engine and a free power gearbox, should produce ~ 150 SHP. The trike will not be registered for road use only track use. This will be a long project, but i have the engine gearbox and have started working on the frame.

The engine is home built by a friend of mine in Sweden. He built the engine using off the shelf parts, i have started to build the same type of engine but he ask me i would like to buy it so i did. He had this engine in his bike which ran a top speed of 300 plus KMH (186 MHP) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yD8YEGD6TW4 I made up a test stand so i can run the engine and get the feel of it, i will pull it apart for cleaning and check all the parts to make sure they are OK for a full power run as i want to make exact measure of thrust of the engine, he said ~ 150 lbs of thrust.

I change the thrust measuring device, this will work out set up a small video camera under the test stand.

The gearbox i will be using is out of the Boeing 502 gas turbine- generator unit, it's a reduction gearbox no gear changes on this open the throttle and hang on. So basically the hot gases enter the nozzle guide vanes and directed onto the turbine wheel which turns the shaft. So the turbine engine will spin at ~70,000 RPM and the reduction gearbox will spin ~ 6,000 rpm.

250-300hp with a free turbine. That's some serious power in a trike - with no engine braking!!

    Cool project.

Very early in my working career there was a story went round about a couple of the mechanics that had been playing around with one of the towable gas turbine powered aircraft starting units. These units produced high volume compressed air feed for the main engine starter turbines.
Supposedly the guys had found there was enough thrust from compressor output to propel the unit along the tarmac while they rode on it
Not sure if it was fact or urban legend but a good story either way...

I made a couple of modifications to the gearbox, dill out the studs and tap 8 mm threaded holes so i can screw on mounting bosses and tap a 3/4 pipe thread for the oil drain. I need to circulate oil through the gearbox and into a oil cooler, there will be a lot of heat generated from the engine.

Machine up the bosses and drill and countersink hole for cap screws.

Thanks Mr shed, yeah i have been playing around with small turbines for a while. I do have another turbine on the go which will be the biggest home built turbine in the world and it will pump out ~400 ponds of thrust so hook up to a free power gearbox about 400 SHP But that's been put away for now. This little engine has some power, the very first speed run it did was on a frozen lake in Sweden here is a on onboard camera. Note the bike starts fishtailing.

I had to flip the diff upside down because the out put shaft spins counterclockwise and this will require a small gear pump to circulate oil from the bottom of the diff to the pinion gear shaft tapered bearings. I shortend the axel by just under 300 mil but with disk conversion and wheels i will have about 55 inch wheel base.

I reckon you blokes must need a large space behind the tank to accommodate your nuts!!
I'd be turning the seat cover into a wedgie at the thought of 200kmh on ice!

I have to ask how you end up building turbine powered bikes/trikes?
As a kid did you just wake up one morning and think "Im bored with Lego, let's make a turbine bike today!!" ??

Most people have only ever seen turbine engines on aircraft, less have actually touched one and even less own them.
You'd be in a pretty small group that is playing with one in your shed.

    Awesome stuff

    Steve
