I cut the tube to make the ID suit the bore size of the flange and tack weld the tube together, next is to do the math for the concentric reducer and make up a new strap for the V band clamp.

Nice work - you're making good progress.
Well done with those v-band flanges. Love the trepanning

Thanks mate, the progress has been slowed down as i had to dig up blocked stormwater pipes at my place full of tree roots almost done plus a couple more house projects to get done then it's back to the workshop
I left as much material on the V band flanges may help in controlling warping, i think i may just stitch weld and use some exhaust putty to seal up the joint.

I've lost track of which bit is which - not sure if its compressor or exhaust so can't tell how hot its going to get. I've never been a fan of exhaust putty myself and prefer to use high temp silicon if I can get away with it. Its good for about 350degC

I reckon you'll be OK in regards to distortion though if you just do short sections of weld and alternate around it. You could always make some sort of a rough jig like a bit of flat plate with a few blocks tacked around it to make sure it didn't go egg shaped.
What are you planning to weld it with?
I'd normally use stainless stick electrodes for joining stainless to mild steel - they work well. I'm sure there will be other good methods.

The large flange is for the exhaust stack which may get up to ~ 600 degC and the other flange is the duct from engine to NGV that part will see about the same temps, and more when i do a full power run. I'll just tack weld first and then get it tig welded. I think if i place the part on a thick aluminium plate when welding will help it from distortion as it suck most of the heat away.

And finish the cad work ( cardboard assistant design ) for the concentric reducer, use the angle grinder and cut out the 16 sections on the SS tube and a bit of heat then tap down the sections to form the concentric reducer.

    Hi Turbine Builder,

I was wondering how you were getting on with this project ! Thanks for the update.

PS. I would shift that angle grinder out of the picture, the lack of a guard might raise an eyebrow or two

Looks like i can not log into this site using my PC, have old software XP home I get this message The client and server don't support a common SSL protocol version or cipher suite. This is likely to be caused when the server needs RC4, which is no longer considered secure.

This site can’t provide a secure connection

I'm using my mates PC, but can not use it all the time. So will post any updates on the trike project until i get a new PC which will be in the new year maybe.

    Hi Turbine Builder,

Go and download a Linux Live CD ISO image, burn it to a CD and then boot your computer from it !
Linux will not make any changes to the software on your computer unless you tell it to, but you will be able to run Linux directly from the CD. Obviously you will not be able to save anything unless you save to a memory stick or usb hard drive. But you will be able to surf the net and this site and any pictures on a memory stick can be uploaded in exactly the same way as you normally would.

I use "Q4OS" just make sure that you download the correct 32 or 64 bit version. I would think if you have XP then your machine will be 32 bits. I've been using Linux since 1993 ish and wouldn't use anything else.

    Good Luck.
    Best Regards:
    Baron J.
