Masport chipper/shredder shaft repair
Made some decent progress.
Got the steady bits finished to the point where it's functional.
Picked up a suitable bearing to go on the shaft, built the shaft up with the MIG and got it all in the lathe.
Then realized I'd made another minor miscalculation.
I couldn't get the steady to where the supports lined up with the bearing, as it hit on the side plate of the chipper rotor.
So I made up a quick bearing support out of some scrap.
Then got on with turning it to size. Finally got to this point.
It's definitely not to nuclear power station spec, but better than I started with!!

Cut my first ever keyway on the shaper. Turned out better than I expected.
Bored out the pulley, made press fit plug for the hole and fitted it.
Bored to fit the shaft then realized I need to make an internal keyway tool for the shaper. I knew that 1" allthread I've been moving around my sheds for 20 years would come in handy one day!!
It's just the right size to fit in my large tool holder.
Couple of progress photos.

Keyway cut, drilled and tapped for a couple of grub screws to make sure the pressed in pulley center can't move.
Also drilled and tapped for a keyway grub screw as the original wasn't coming out - even once the mushroomed end was removed during boring.
Only key steel I had was 8x10 and I needed 6x6 so reduced a piece using the shaper.
Felt like a slight overkill - a bit like using a sledge hammer to drive in an upholstery tack
Next step is to reassemble it

Hi Steve,
Very nicely done !
I would have done exactly the same to make a key. It wouldn't be the first time I've filed a piece of the square bar as used between door handles down to make something like that.Best Regards:
Baron J.

Basically back together again - just needs a couple of seconds with the grinder to trim the key to length and the belt guard can be refitted.
The key was a firm tap to fit but went in smoothly, so hopefully it's all snug enough that it won't flog itself to death again. Time will tell....
