Default Macson 18" Shaper spruce up WIP

    Hi all,

I've had this shaper for a few years now and used it on several occasions however the wear on the ram and ways has prevented me from doing any work of reasonable tollerance.

So it's been sitting patiently in it's spot in the shed waiting for it's turn. While I have other projects on the go, I couldn't help but make a start since I have had my surface plate sitting and waiting.

    I know for a fact that the ram and ways have considerable wear as does the dovetail gibb. First thing is to blue up the base of the ram and have a look;

The results of the first blue are not surprising. While there seems to be some smearing indicating too much blue but either way it's a sad picture. The eveness of my blue distribution and the quality of my scraping will hopefully improve as the cycles carry on. It's been a while since I did one of the Melbourne scraping classes so I'm playing catchup with my skills I acquired in that course.

At this stage I'm not too concerned with alignment to other planes or surfaces, I just want to start getting some increased contact. As the contact increases I will start to look at any variations in the width of the dovetail and squareness to the vertical ways etc. and then make some adjustments as required.

The second pic is after 6 cycles. a lot of work ahead of me!

Don't know what happened to the thread tittle!

Anyway. Results so far after 10 cycles. One side is getting alot more contact over the length. The other side is still playing catchup. There is a thin blue line just appearing on the outer edge of that side now as well.

I think I'm getting a little better with scraper blade control and consistency. I have played around with the tc scraper blade shapening angle. I initially sharpened to 6 degrees but have now changed to 5 degrees. Also the blue I am using is a home-brew made stuff using Shell alvania grease and prussian blue powder. I am finding it very difficult to spread over the larger area. I have scraped smaller items but the ram being the largest item I have scraped, I'm finding the blue to be too viscous to spread thinly. I think I will throw it in the microwave for 10 seconds and add a couple drops of oil to thin it down.

Also my shed is still too dusty. I have had a rather big cleanup in order to do this but still too dusty. I'm getting small foreign particles settle on the plate which is becomming annoying. I had also been having issues with the cleaning rag catching and leaving fibres on the inner edge of the bottom of the ram. I have since given that inner edge a light chamfer with a file to remove burs and casting imperfections which has helped.

I had forgotten how much like hard work this is! No wonder they invented biax machines!!!

Big job with a hand scraper, but you will get there and look like Popeye when you're finished

While I haven't asked Joe if he wants to sell his biax, I'm tipping he will be hanging onto it. Even if it was for sale I doubt I could afford or justify the expense.

I'll press on bit at a time with my trusty hand scraper. It's quite liberating not not using power. Relaxing even.

im liking this thread all ready.
can you show us a photo of your marking out table(is that what you call it?)
does that mean you have to scrape the bottom half as well? how will you blue that bit?

    Hi Aaron,

    It's a granite surface plate.

I'll see if I can get out and take a pic tonight. Devastated by a magpie defeat atm so watching NRL prelim to take mind off it.

Once the base of the ram and dovetails are scraped flat and parallel, I then plan to blue up the ram to spot the machine base. Process starts again. The dovetails on the machine base will be interesting. Awkward scraping angle.

Somewhere along the line I also need to check alignment or squareness to vertical ways.

I terms of scraping machines, I think a shaper is a good machine for a first attempt, especially one that has a fair bit of wear because I can't really make it any worse!

There's a lot to learn and a good portion of the learning comes from experience which I really don't have.

If i manage this project to my satisfaction then I'll have a crack at my mill.

Hopefully the membership on the forum can keep me progressing in the right direction.

Im certainly committed to scraping a couple of projects since I've spent the cash on the gear.

Where are you getting the cast iron stock to replace the gib? I'd like to know as I can only find round which is a waist for the price there asking for it.

Hi Dave. I'm not looking to replace the Gibb. It's a parallel dovetail gibb not tapered and should still have plenty of meat left on it when I'm done.

Fair enough, I'm looking for a bit for my mill ram dovetail, I think the gib was dropped at factory and lost about 30-40mm from memory. Round is expensive if you have to turn most of it into chips.
Same with thick steel plates with large bores, I need to invest or make some trapanning tools.

Hi Dave, what sized piece/s are you looking for???? Asking as I have some here, thickest piece would be about 30mm if that helps.

Hi Kryn, a quick check 40mm would be perfect and it's about 400mm long, didn't look at thickness but probably around 10-12mm
Peter has spoken highly about you on your visit to Newcastle but we haven't met yet.

Hi Dave, I'll have a look tomorrow and see what I have around that size. He spoke of you also, next time I'm over that way I'll have to correct that issue, I'm sure Pete will help me on that?
