All good.
I got three things on the go and I don't work all that fast at best so a no tg of chit chat in between is good.
Thanks Bruce. I'm still keen to set up a copper plate. Your mirror finish on the blades is a work of art.

Not that I've done a lot of scraping, but I've found using diamond lapping disks on a small bench grinder gives an good finish.

Yea recently bought one of those too.
I never realised you could get a finish with a copper disc until Bruce mentioned it. Anyway, see how we go...

The copper disc is loaded up with diamond paste. You could use cast iron or aluminum I just happened to have a copper disc.

Oh. I see.
You wipe it on and it impregnates into the surface. Yea they did that with cast iron at the scraping class.
I have diamond paste in various grit sizes so I'll come up with something.

That's actually a pretty good price considering they are $5-6000 new. I was lucky i picked up my coborne for $150, no where near as good as a Biax or Renz but it does the job.
Just in case you need another project simon, Robin Renzetti has just shown on instagram how he converted a old reciprocating saw into a power scraper, might be a affordable option for you.

Actually I've been looking at that. Joe Hovel made one a few years ago. By all accounts he reported reasonable good results for the price. I think he used an Aldi machine.

I'm sure Stuart posted up about modifying one many years ago, sadly I don't see him on here these days. I was in contact with him a year or 2 ago through email.
He was moving to a big a better shop on a property.Using Tapatalk

The Diamond paste is loaded into the lapping disc, a bearing mounted onto a shaft works so you can push it into your lapping plate. This embeds the diamond particles into your lapping plate. I haven't measured the SFP of my setup but it is not fast. I can measure if anyone wants to know.
A couple of years back there was a lapping machine at my local scrappy, I didn't buy it but probably should have. It used copper plates, they were marked in grit size.
Its not rocket science when we are just doing 2 small edges. In saying that the copper loaded disc does give great results, Marko favorably commented on the edges that I lapped.
Cheers

G'Day Snaptap,
Coborne, now they are rare as. I Probably could have picked one up a few years back. I was thinking about buying it and giving it to Phil M. It would have been a great talking point if the scraping classes went forward.
Cheers

Very interested in this as I'm not anywhere near up on scraping and sharpening.
I have a really nice big certified surface plate, a new Sandvic scraper and also one of Phil's beautiful homemade ones etc (both from him)
Could you take a picture, I'm trying to figure out your bearing idea, but can't visualize it.Using Tapatalk

Hi Dave,
From my understanding, you get an old bearing with and OD of around 30 - 40mm and press it onto a shaft which will be the handle.
Then, the disc which is attached to your bench grinder or whatever is lightly smeared with diamond paste and then switched on so it's spinning. You then present the bearing outer race (that you have on a holder) to the surface of the disc while it is spinning. The motion of the bearing turning while pressed onto the disc impregnates the diamond into the disc surface.
I remember now seeing Phil and Marco show us at the scraping class.

Yes, way to much playing around at the start. Way to many points before getting full(or close to full) bearing.(for what my opinion is worth) But then it was sure a valuable lesson when I learnt it.
Are you spin testing?(by your last picture it looks a little heavy on the ends)
Not 100% sure I like the scrape first and worry about alignment later, although given the part and the machine I don't see any huge issues either..... but then I am 100% sure I wouldn't necessarily know.
Still, looks good so far even if you did a few more cycles that you'd do on the next one.
oh he is around now and then, just dont say his name three times Only came across this thread as there was mention of it in Simons powerfeed thread. I did a thread on my Buniax but the pictures are all gone. I'm sure I have them here if anyone cares to see them.

Hi Stu, great to hear from you.
Yea maybe I should have had a couple of looks at alignment just to see where it is and how I need to be tracking. It may bite me on the !
I have looked at the mounting where the clapper attaches and it seems to be pretty dam close to perpendicular, surely that's a good start. Realistically I figured that any misalignment in droop can be taken up when I attack the ways on the actual machine. Or, I could just plane the top of the box when done.
Horizontal alignment however is not that easily mitigated but I won't know until I put the ram back on the machine and use my $100 granite square to take some measurements.
