There was a Biax scraper, as well as another similar machine of different make, at the Ajax Industrial Fasteners clearing sale a couple of weeks ago. Can't recall what it went for but way over what I was prepared to fork out for a 'maybe one day' tool.

    Thanks Michael & Pete.

110V not an issue, I already run a couple of 110V tools on a step down trans. Issue is the high cost of even S/H biax machines.

I'm not complaining, it's just the way it is. Unless I come across a "dead" one i can fixfor a few hundred then it's probably not going to happen. Chances are that t if I can fix it then so can the next person so it will still be a sort after item.

Anyway. Still getting used to this biax. Been playing around with the stroke length and the angle that I present the tool to the workpiece. It all has an impact on results.

I've learnt not to change any settings half way through a cycle because it can change the depth of scrape and create anomalies in the next spotting.

Pic of my last cycle shows I have contact now pretty much full length but it not as consistent as I would like. It's a consequence of the above and me getting used to the machine.

I'm also not happy with my sharpening process either. I have ordered a 3000 grit diamond wheel. Stefan Gotteswinter uses one and seems happy wi t h it so for around $10 I'll give it a go too.

    Gday Simon.
I lap on a copper disc, I get mirror edges. Yes the training the arms body to move with no deviation is what is needed. Go for it to remove the bulk, remember round and round . change to the smaller carbide tip to pick up the high spots.

    Hi Bruce,

I have noticed all your carbide tips are mirror finish. Too scared to use yours I've mostly been using my R 60/90 tip.

A copper disc you say? That's it just a disc of copper attached to a bench grinder set to 5 degrees rake?

Yep set to 5 degrees. Use what is there, the orig BIAX that goes down to about 12mm is great for spotting. What ever is in the roll go for it.

Thanks Bruce. I'll acquire some copper and make a disc and see how I go.

I bought it on behalf of a guy in queensland for 1200, the renz went for $1000. It was in pretty good condition, worked beautifully (the only time ive ever actually handled one, and at that price probably the only time.)

Were you the one bidding up all the R8 tooling as well?
I went there planning to get some tooling for my Bridgeport head, came away with just a compound mag sine vice. Happy enough with that but it seemed to me that stuff was being bid into the stratosphere. I hadn't previously taken any notice of what Biax scrapers went for though.

No I only bought I little hofman dividing head for myself for $90. All the tooling was beat and everything went for basically stratospheric money. Beat up Roku went for nearly 16k after RIP. Were you there when the table covered in micrometres collapsed and sprayed them all over the floor?

    G’day Simon,
Don’t worry about getting a copper lapping disc. Use what ever is there, I will relap later. Sharpen with what you have.
    Cheers
    Bruce.

The same guy I bought the biax for also bought about 20 three point bore micrometres but I didn't end up getting any indicators. Wish I could have afforded some of the BAC drawers.

Yep that happened while I was paying for my sine chuck a few meters away. It was on the table that collapsed. Stuffed the wooden box, but the chuck was unharmed- unlike some of the mics I think. Lockwoods workers seem to be pretty careless the way they set things out.
The price they got for that big Roku mill surprised me too. The beat up series 1 BP mill went fairly cheap, then the buyer must have been spending up the rest of his budget buying all the R8 tooling, there was a cabinet with some good R8 gadgetry that I bid over my budget on but he blew me out of the water.
Anyway, apologies for the hijack- must be time for more shaper scrapering.
