Default Micro Petrol Air Compressor "Project Loan Out"

This week i have arranged to pick up this little 3/4th horse power compressor pump and plan on matching it with this Lifan 2.5hp petrol engine as a little portable go anywhere unit fits perfectly in my boot I'm guessing will weigh less than 30-40kg so quiet easy to lift it will be for loaning out to friends and family for whatever they want to do that requires compressed air i do have a small 25L electric compressor but i am cleaning out the shed i have used that one 3 times in 10 years mostly use the bigger compressor for bigger jobs, this little unit will be put together and likely loaned to my cousin who does mechanical work I'll attach 3 meters of hose with a fitting that suits my rattle gun

i loaned out my very first air compressor a small 25L 30L electric and my uncle tipped it over painting a car and kept painting and blew up the machine i think this little Lifan engine has a low oil sensor so i am hopping if it tips over it will shut off

the tank is bare now ready for the pump and engine to go on to it will get a pic tomorrow of tank its a little 30L tank, cost it should cost less than $250 for the whole air compressor the little pump is brand new and the engine will also be new

Old electric compressor came from a person that lived next to the Nepean River unsure if salt water comes that far up river but some external rust under the paint i am going to remove the paint with some paint stripper than wash it and wire brush off any rust than use the new big air compresdor to spray the tank color undecided yet

Anyone think that a 50cc whipper snipper engine could power that pump or should i keep with the design? I have a lathe to make a pulley or a flywheel adaptor

You will need a motor with a governor

If you did use a 50cc brush cutter motor, it will do about 6 - 7000 rpm, so assume you set the no load engine speed to 5000 rpm then you need to divide the recommended pump rpm into 5000.

    Assume 5000/1440 = a geared down ratio of 3.5 to 1

It will have the power I think, but the engine will die in the r s as the air pressure builds up, you will need a governor or it wont work,
    certainly not properly.

    cheers, shed

Shed what does the governer do? Control engine speed? I was thinking about using the throttle control lever that is used on big petrol compressors where a piston pushes the throttle untill the correct psi is reached than it retracts and a spring pulls the throttle lever back they are $15 on ebay minus spring

As load is applied to the engine it starts to slow, the governor opens the throttle further to maintain the rpm,

I uploaded a picture to last post i think they are pressure regulated via a spring and seal and it moves the cable in return moving the idle automatically

It might work but i really dont know, there are no tech details in the pic.

That motor will do nicely, make sure you get your belt ratio right as compressor pumps are not built for drag racing.
Do you know what motor and pulleys were attached to that compressor pump?

Hey Shed i think old maye on gumtree may have pulled one over on me, i made contact sun/mon he said he had a funeral to goto and wouldnt be back untill friday which is today i made contact with no reply today and the add has been taking down

I feel a bit stupid now after buying the petrol engine so now i am left scratching my head, i grabbed the old direct pump and pulled it a part in desperation as to keep on track with the project what a downer

The old pump will possibly work i have a lathe and grinder, if i ground this mass down than made a pulley for the shaft i think it may work i will have to make a home made fan

Only down side is i dont know the pumps rpm

    Feel so bloody gullabile

I hope you didn’t just remove the motor armature and make a pulley to fit on the shaft?

That compressor will most likely need the bearing at the other end of the armature shaft, it will be a single sided crank that drives the piston. Removing the support and attaching a pulley will flog the bearing out in next to no time.

Tried to get a 1hp pump from China they cost USD$30 there but the lady said shipping is very high so that's a bummer

Thanks Droog i have never pulled one of these pumps a part so had no clue about the one sided bearing i will make a face plate up on the lathe if it fits with another bearing inside or outside the face plate

Check it first you may be lucky but I suspect not, they are built to a budget.

Looking at similar type direct drive indicates about 1700 rpm
