    Default What linisher belt width

Im building a well powered linisher, 3kw with VSD and considering making it suit multiple belt widths starting at 50mm going up to 100mm. Any thoughts recommendations? Should I just stick to 1 size, ie 50mm? Will be used for knife making, sharpening etc.

Not quite sure what you mean by making it suit multiple belt widths. Do you mean by changing the size of the crowned wheel or something else?

If you just run a narrow belt on the side of a wide crowned wheel then pressure on the belt will make it move off the wheel.

I have a multitool on a 1HP grinder that runs a 50 mm belt, and a 1m long 3HP 150 mm belt - both are on VFDs. Both are very useful.

Thanks BobL. Id like to have the ability to do fine work with the 50mm wide belt but also have a machine that is able to do heavier work using a wider belt. I figured that the machine is able to handle all loads, fine or heavy but not sure about rollers etc. If I cant get the belt to track on different width rollers I guess Id just have to change roller widths and relevant plattern etc. I don't have the room for two separate machines.

A narrow belt will track fine in the middle of a domed roller and you can push down on the belt and it won't move sideways much. What it comes down to is if you use the sides of the belt especially running over a platten (a [usually] flat underside support for a belt) or a [usually) the non-domed roller, then the belt will move sideways away from your workpieces. If you don need to use the sides of the belt then it won't matter. If you build a multiple roller machine and need to use the sides of the belt above a platten or belt running over the side of a roller you could build in a platten repositioner, and only change the one roller size you want to work with. Should be pretty easy.
