Quorn Tool and Cutter Grinder first trial
This has been a long term project for me - I was given the castings as a present some 30 odd years ago and while it was always on my to do list, life just seemed to get in the way until I retired a few years back. The build has taken around 20 months - I'm not sure how many actual hours it did take as I spent a lot of time the last 20 months scratch building 2 guitar amps, optical audio compressors and numerous electronic repairs all for various relatives.
The handles for my Quorn tool & cutter grinder arrived yesterday and after spending around half a day fitting them I finally reached the point where I was able do some real trials. I didn't go with the traditional ball handles as I don't have a ball turning attachment and the adjustable handles available on ebay don't look that out of place. I jury rigged a drive belt as I'm still waiting for the urethane belt to arrive in the post.
As I have a lot of drills that have seen better days I did the first test on 1/2 inch drill bit that had dull chipped cutting edges, I do have one of the $39 Ozito drill sharpeners and they while do a passable job as a quick and dirty drill sharpener it does take some practice to make sure that each cutting edge is the same length.
I believe the Quorn can be set up to put a conventional type rake on the cutting edge but I was keen to try the 4 facet method as I had heard that it was a superior way to sharpen drills, following some written instructions that I found on the internet it took me around 2 or 3 mins to setup for the 4 facet sharpening and around 2 mins to do the actual sharpening, I did eyeball one part of the setup as I haven't yet made one of the set up accessories - despite this the result looks great and works great.
I still need to make a belt and wheel guard and finish off the felt wipers/dust seals on the sliding parts - less important is few different wheels and a lathe tool bit holder, I'll need to do some reading up and youtubing before I tackle end mills and high on my do to list as an accessory is an air spindle so I can sharpen end mill flutes, I have read that the original Quorn accessory used for end mill flutes is not great (barely useable) so rather than waste time on this I may as well put the time into an air spindle.
I don't really have any pics of the actual build apart from a few of the engraving on the indexing work head.
