Thread: Brass hammer

Decided it was time I produced a soft blow hammer, on account of me using a regular claw hammer and brass drift for things like tapping end mills into the head-stock and removing chucks etc.

Apologies for no action shots, just the finished product. Fairly basic in all respects, although I did toy with the idea of interchangeable faces for nylon and lead etc I decided for now solid brass will do just fine.

And I got to use my radius turning tool, to cut the shoulders on the handle, which it did a fine job of. I finished the handle with 400 grit paper and a diamond knurl. And in the process learned that feed speeds for knurls on one diameter of work do not produce the same pattern on another diameter of work. I did a test pattern on a scrap piece of about 40mm stock, and then discovered it produced a totally unacceptable knurl pattern on the much smaller handle. I had to skim it off and redo it, after first working out which feed to use.

The head was drilled, tapped and recessed for the handle shoulder in the 4 jaw chuck. I got a very tight fit actually, just taking very light cuts and sneaking up on the final diameter of the recess.

I've made a few soft blow hammers from brass, ally cork and leather
The little one is a fretting mallet for guitar frets.

I've also made quite a few wooden ones.
This rock sheoak headed one I made last year to replace a red gum head that had fallen to bits after extensive use.

Yeah it will never look that good again, rust and work scars will take over in no time I'm sure. It was a really enjoyable project actually, I'm tempted to make another smaller one, god knows what for but you can never have an over supply of tools I reckon!

That's a nice hammer I have been thinking of making one myself, just a matter of finding the brass at a reasonable price

I bought a 1 foot piece of brass round bar from a local supplier for about $40. Also been collecting scrap brass so that I can cast some myself one of these days.

$40 that's a steel I was quoted $90 for a 50mm x 200mm, at that price I may as have just purchased one so I am keeping an eye out for scrap piece.

If you have a scrapyard near that scraps or specialises in scrapping switchgear, particularly old heavy power stuff, there is brass or bronze bar in those besides copper and other precious metals. I scored some 15 X 5 mm copper bar out of a scrap cabinet a few weeks ago.

Nice hammer. Yes it wont look like that for long but you know it was great when new which is all what counts!

I just bought 200mm of 20mm brass bar and it cost me $8
