Record No.3 (3VSB) unboxing
I was not sure where to post this on the forum but believe this does deserve a spot in the vintage machinery section.
I am sure everyone is bored of seeing photos of "a man and his vice", however this is a bit of a special example. And I hate unboxing posts but bare with me.
I am not a die hard "Record vice" fan, my Woden vice that I bought used several years ago and restore, did what I needed it to do.
The metal deficiency inside me could not resist such an opportunity.
I have managed to get my hands on a new in the box Record No.3 vice. The 3VSB model to be exact which means it comes with a swivel base.
Slight rust on exposed metal surfaces but everything in factory condition.
There is a label on the box that says: Cowell's Building Supplies, 165 Regency Road, Broadview (the business probably closed down decades ago).
There is no indication of an actual date but there is a price tag $49.95 (I paid AUD 100 for the vice).

The following photos are just images in the sequence when I unboxed the vice:

I almost do not want to even clean it up and a part of me wants to put it back in the box. But life is too short and this is going to be my daily work horse

Hi Kafie,
Congratulations on acquiring a very fine vise ! I have one of those that I've had for many years, no swivel base but I would have taken it off anyway. Depending upon what you are going to grip with it I would certainly get or make some soft jaws. I have two types that I use on mine. One pair that just clips on over the original jaw, and a pair that I made from hard aluminium that replaces the original hard jaws. Actually the replacement alloy jaws are still in place and I tend to use the clip on ones over them. I must confess that I doubt that I could find the original steel jaws anyway !Best Regards:
Baron J.

They are indeed a quality vice although not the same after Irwin took over.
The Record No.3 vice is regularly sold on gumtree/facebook/ebay but mostly in used or restored condition for some crazy prices but I had never seen one unused.
I am not a big fan of swivel bases but that was probably because of the terrible experience I had with a cheap vice years ago. I will see how well the Record swivel base works although I have never needed the swivel function for anything.
I already have two pairs of soft jaws that clip on using magnets, one pair made of aluminium and one pair with rubber faces in an aluminium body.
Irwin still makes replacement jaws for the Record vice but they are relatively expensive. We can even find cheaper after market replacement jaws but there are some reports that the mounting holes do not line up.

Sorry accidently clicked the "want pics". NICE score, certainly impossible to find a new used one, and for an EXCELLENT price too.
I find sometimes a swivel base is handy, having an odd shaped item, needing a bit of surgery, and can't be fitted because it's ended up against a wall, or piece of machinery. DAMHIKT

You want photos, you will get photos.
After a quick cleanup this morning it turned out really nice:

On the topic of swiveling bases, the Record swivel base seems to have a nice heavy swiveling mechanism that locks along a fairly large portion of the flanged face (if I can call it that). The Record swivel base does lock in fairly securely. Only time will tell if like it or hate it.
IIRC a “boat anchor” swivel vice I owned about a decade ago just used 2 oval shaped pieces of steel (just a thick washer) and that was a very flimsy setup.

I have an old 6" Venlic Vice I am modifying and used three bearings to centre the vice body on the base. Yet to make a round disc to lock them together with yet as the original was just a really poor fitting piece of rectangular plate, rounded on the ends.
You may improve the Record with a couple of bearings attached to the vice base, to fit in the positions shown in a modified pic of yours.Nev.

Perhaps in the future but if the swivel base is not upto my expectations then I will simply take it off and mount the vice directly.

Congratulations on acquiring a reliable workhorse. Although these vise are not cheap, but they are really worth it.
