    Default Klopp Shaper Model 1000H

After a quite a few years in storage and other competing projects the mates big (and I mean big) Klopp Shaper got its first run. It still needs a further clean up and service. As usual it did not come with a manual and I am chasing one as it has an issue with the quick traverse function i need to sort out. It should be handy to resurface the odd anvil or swage block. YouTube video of it running.

Hi Fargo, Cutting Edge Engineering up in Brissy has the same machine, and he has a copy of the manual, he may make a copy it for you.
His machine went into the shed today, from being in storage also. The machine is missing the reversing cable for the clapper box, so if yours has it, you might take the details of it and help each other out with a swap.

Kurtis at Cutting Edge Engineering kindly sent me a copy of the manual. Confirmed that there is an issue with the the rapid traverse function.

    Default Klopp 1000H Shaper update

Viewing of CEE Klopp video and perusal of the manual generously provide by CEE confirmed there was an issue with the quick traverse function on Jim’s machine. The first step was to remove the quick traverse motor and check that the drive key on the motor shaft was not sheared and the motor tuned in the correct direction. Both of these items were correct. The next item in the quick traverse drive train is the worm wheel shaft and worm. To access this component required the strip down of the feed drive mechanism.

On disassembly it was apparent that the unit had at some point had suffered water ingress with minor damage to some components. Once the numerous taper pins had been removed and drive unit disassembled access was gained to the final component in the quick traverse drive train, the worm wheel. The worm wheel rides on the on the main feed shaft and when the shaper is operation is held stationary by the worm wheel shaft. The worm wheel has a recess machined in the bore which has a spring loaded sprag tooth (item 190) that rides on the shaft. When the quick traverse motor is actuated the worm wheel is rotated and the sprag tooth engages in a recess machined in the drive shaft and rotates the feed shaft.

On disassemble the sprag tooth was found to be seized in the retracted position, with the springs corroded and broken. This was the cause of the lack of quick traverse function. Replacement springs were sourced from the Mick Moyles in Summer Hill, a fantastic resource and one of the last “brick and mortar” second hand machinery dealers left in Sydney and luckily for me close by. After a thorough clean of components replacement of a roller bearing, needle roller bearing and sleeve, and the a fore mentioned springs the feed unit was reassembled and installed back on to the shaper for test.

The sprag tooth can be seen in the image below.
