Not much to show at the moment as time has been limited, however I've managed to get a coat of paint on some of the parts.

Unfortunately I’ve had very little spare time lately, so the grinder is being neglected. I’ve done a little design work to fix the poorly modified spindle, but I haven’t even had time to compile all that into a post... but hopefully soon.
Have you been able to pick up your machine yet?

    Merry Christmas to all.

I finally got around to picking up my tool grinder. Couldnt believe how heavy it was. My poor old engine crane struggled a little. It was a difficult extraction and took a few hours as I was on my own and had a sloping driveway to deal with.

Mine is labelled Gerod instead of Cincinnati but Im sure they are one and the same. Managed to get a few accessories. No thanks to the sellers lack of knowledge, but thats another story. So I got the rotary work head (which looks original), the vice, plenty of fittings including fixings, fingers and brackets. Lots of bits and pieces that I have no idea about. As a super bonus it came with the original ID grinder attachment.

I will clean it up and then give it a proper once over. All the knobs and levers seem to work except for the fine X travel. Cant get the gear cog to engage.

    Anyway heres a few pictures.

Wow, nice find! It looks to be in a lot better condition than mine. They are deceptively heavy, which is thanks to the absence of sheet metal and plastic - just heavy castings everywhere!

Glad it came with all the tooling, that is a big loss on my machine...

It looks to have Bronze bearings in the Spindle? Not sure if you are aware but Bronze grinder bearings need very low viscosity oil (ISO 3) to manage the high RPM. As far as I'm aware it's only available in 20ltr drums and isn't cheap...That's one of the factors I've had to consider as my spindle is toast and needs to be remade.

Anyway Congrats on the new machine!

    Thanks Dave

By expensive for ISO 3 spindle oil, how much do you mean?

Another option might be to remove the whole spindle and simply fit a bench grinder to it. You could even mount the grinder to an adjustable angle plate which will give you tilt on another axis. Not sure if it can be done due to the shaft balance of the bench grinder. Maybe someone out there can let us know. Theres plenty of surface to mount a bench grinder up there and it would remove the whole belt pulley system.

Dont know how difficult it would be to convert the brass split bearings to modern roller bearings but it looks like a mission. Heres a photo I found on the net of a spindle pulled apart.

I would also like to know what this is? It came with the tool grinder. Looks like it takes some sort of collet at the front but seems to spin freely. At the rear there is a toggle that when you depress moves the spindle back. I feel like I have seen something like this before but cant quite remember what it is?

'Spinning freely' and 'Collet' makes me think End Mill Sharpener but it's a little hard to tell from the photo.

I haven't a link at the moment but the Spindle Oil was around $250 for 20L. They may be a forum member(s) that have some to sell, or could split the cost with you.

As far as I know, you are correct about the bench grinder shaft and it's balance. The degree of wobble would result in poor surface finish and general inaccuracy, which might be acceptable for basic sharpening but no use if you plan to use it for anything precise, for example internal grinding or cylindrical grinding.

As to the spindle conversion I've been designing a roller bearing version based on the cartridge type found in the Cincinnati No2 Grinders, which I can never find the time to compile a post about...There's a fair amount of machining to do, but this grinder was always going to be a long term project for me. Here's some of the drawings in the mean time:

Could be an end mill sharpener. Might post some pictures on the general discussion forum and see what happens.

As for the oil it does sound a bit steep but 20 ltr should last two lifetimes. Wouldnt hurt to reach out and see if anyone out there is happy to sell some oil in smaller batches. I just need some to fill the spindle and test. Dont want to turn it dry whatsoever, even by hand. I have an old benchtop surface grinder. I wonder if that ISO3 spindle oil would be compatible? Having looked at some youtube videos Im coming to realise that spindles are a very complex subject.

Looks like you have a good plan there. Interested to see how it works out.

There are a lot of options available. Maybe finding an old valve grinder and adopting the head?

I'd be happy if I had the Bronze Bearing Spindle. Properly tuned they can have the same accuracy as very expensive precision roller bearings. They also have the reputation of providing an excellent surface finish too. They are however a little finicky, but I think they'd be worth the trouble.

Most all the pieces of the original spindle had been removed from my grinder and replaced with a very basic roller bearing setup, with very obvious end float. I was strongly considering remaking the original Bronze spindle, but the cost of Bronze for the Bearings, the trouble of sourcing Babbitt thrust washers, plus the cost of oil made it uneconomical, as my budget is fairly low.

If you choose to go a different route I'd be more than happy to take the spindle of your hands...

We are all on a budget Dave but we still find a way to buy things we might need one day. The term is tool junkies. hahaha.

From what I have read it seems that the original bearings are pretty good. They just float on a film of oil like a crankshaft. perfect and simple. I dont think I will be changing my setup but I will keep an eye out for a spindle head or some bronze bar. You never know what you come across.

I will give a local oil supplier, The Green Goanna a call in the coming week to see if they can supply some spindle oil in smaller quantities. They are always helpful and dont mind dealing with small orders. Again if anyone out there is willing to sell a small quantity that would be great.
