Wadkin MA Chain & Chisel Mortiser
Hi Guys, Charl here from Brisbane. I originally posted here: https://www.woodworkforums.com/f299/wadkin-ma-242287
I recently bought this machine which has some missing parts per below:
The chain braker bar:

Is anyone on here up to the task to make up another one of these (or can recommend someone)? A couple of people in the UK have advised they have after market ones on their machine so it's should be too difficult to make one if you're handy at welding (high amps due to thickness of steel) and have the ability to shape some contours.

The other part I am missing is the chain sharpener. This consists of a tube that slides on a bar with sprockets on it - I believe some chain saw sharpeners are similar. This mine:

This is what it should look like;

I was fortunate to get my hands on the chain sharpening sleeve that you use to rotate the chain - it wasn't cheap but at least it was original and saved me a whole lot of pain to get it made up!
Just need to get the block that the chain bar bolts on to BUT I think this is something I won't find so will have to get it made up.

Hey Michael, I am pretty sure I could borrow one off a mate.
I found a guy in the UK who can provide me with one component of this part, see below.

So really then it's the 'body' that I would look at perhaps getting made up. I still want to go and see the guy who sold me the machine as he reckons he use to have it but he's workshop is in such a mess I am not sure if I'd ever find it

That piece does not look anywhere as substantial as the piece you have in the initial pictures - not even sure it is for the same machine. Check what it is made of - I did a bandsaw repair a year or so ago and the original part turned out to be a piece of pot metal - far stronger to make the whole thing from Al rather than try to join pieces on. If that piece is pot metal or Al I would not be buying it if it was my machine.

What it is is a two part component. If I was to get this piece all I then have to do is get the rest made up (the larger solid block piece).

Hard to pick a join, but I think I see what you mean now.
Most of the work is in the bit that you haven't got anyway...

By the looks of it yes. I was thinking of fashioning something out of thick flat bar and welding it all together. It would then need milling to shape it to take the second component which tensions the chain. And also milling on the opposite side where it references to bolt onto the actual machine.

Depends on the size, but I was thinking about milling it from a complete piece of steel. What people forget about welding is that it is an edge joint. While good welds are usually pretty strong in a situation where the two parts being joined together have a relatively large area touching, it is no where near as strong as a single piece of metal.
