Thanks for posting this Simon, it makes for very interesting reading, and is a reminder of what this country could do if there was the political leadership and will.

Wen I was working at UNSW back in the 70s a student researched these tanks as his major project.
The production photos are great. Thanks.
He came up with photos of them test driving them and also test firing twin 25 lb guns at once to make sure the turret ring would be ok for the 17lb.
There was two of these tanks and a hull at the tank museum in Melbourne.
We went to the auction but the 40mm bofors was too expensive.
I’ve a catalog somewhere with the prices.
Don’t think the missus was too keen on it as a yard ornament anyway.
When they flattened the Foundry out Bankstown way where these were cast, the old patterns were just buried.

The Australian cast steel tank never saw real action, but I think did appear in a movie.

Yes, the Rats of Tobruk movie or something like that.

Don't think the Rover LAC was built by Rover in Melbourne .

I see it came with two powerplant options: a power unit with THREE Cadillac engines or a single Pratt and Whitney radial aircraft engine. Both sound like a maintenance nightmare!
