I had a dream about a Colchester lathe last night.
I dreamt I finally got to see what was inside my parents neighbour's sheds.
As kids we always wondered what he had in these sheds as he always kept the doors locked and had a couple of big dogs guarding the place. The neighbour was retired and was always wearing faded blue greasy overalls and oily hands. He was a man of very few words but once he said he fixed cars but we never saw a car going in or out of any of the sheds. The neighbours yard and drive was full of old cars, caravans (their son lived in one), a couple of battered tinnies, weeds, and junk piles over 6ft high - truly Steptoe style. They'd had numerous clean up orders from the council which they ignored.
In my dream I saw one shed with 13 old hacksaws, another had a colchester lathe a couple of old mills, another was full of ancient drill press and shapers.
Back to reality. I was away OS when the neighbour passed away and the 50 something eccentric (looking back now he probably had mental health issues) son (the one that lived in the van) took a fair bit out of the sheds so I never got to see the contents but my dad reckon it was all junk. The son continued with the same secretive behaviour but his hands were always clean? For years rats kept coming over to our place to decimate mums garden. Eventually the cops raided the place and the son was done for stealing electric power and running a significant hydroponic facility. The son never came back home - we don't know what happened to him.
The council organised a clean up (mum and dad being true sticky beaks spent all day watching this)- after 6 skips they looked like they hand not even put a dent in the junk. Eventually they sent around a prime mover and a front end loader. The house was in such a bad shape it was demolished. While this was going hundreds of rats were leaving the placer and invading the neighbours. Dad kept a couple shovels around the house and bought quite a few in traps.

I visited Colchester in 2019.
There was not one monument or statue to Colchester lathes there!
Unbelievable!
