    Default Parkinson Power Hacksaw

Just recently bought a power hacksaw and want to confirm on the cut direction.

It has an arrow on the wheel behind the saw blade. When the wheel spins in the direction of the arrow, it cuts on the forward stroke which is towards the movable jaw.
    That seems counterintuitive.
Should they all be cutting towards the fixed jaw?

We needed to put it to work so we used it the way it's set up and whilst cutting some 150 angle had a bit of flex.

    Trail.

Perhaps the vise is strong enough to stay rigid no matter the direction of cut, and the direction of cut specified on the saw has more to do with where the connecting rod meets the bull gear.

For example, if the cutting stroke puts the connecting rod to bull gear bushing at 12, The unit will experience different loads than if you were to reverse the blade, thereby loading the assembly from the 3:00 to 9:00 position?

Another consideration is the way on which the saw assembly glides. The work will push the blade up, and the blade assembly will react against the way rail. It might be wise to have the power stroke driving the moving saw frame in that preloaded state?

I'm using my imagination to think about what you're assembly looks like, so some of these things might not be applicable.

Also, just speculating here, with it being a power hacksaw that you need to use immediately, I would think whichever way you chose to load it, so long as you're removing material and you're satisfied with the cutting performance, I don't think it's going to hurt anything until you figure out the proper orientation.

Well, I just watched a video and I see that there's got to be a cam mechanism on at least some of the models which lift the guide way rail out of the cut on the return stroke. Based on the direction your motor is spinning, and I believe that ultimately determines the orientation of the blade, make sure the cutting stroke is when the way rail has articulated down burying the blade into the cut. If this is the type of model you have, you'll know really fast the orientation of the blade since you'll be needing to replace it in short order

Trail, FWIW, my late 30's (or so) Hercus power hacksaw cuts towards the moveable jaw and lifts on the return stroke.

I think it is because the the arm that comes from the axle the drives the saw frame does so in such a way as the forward push motion forces the blade/frame down. I did try it in reverse and the pull motion tends to lift the blade up.

At least that was my experience.

The Parkanson power hacksaw in the workshop when I was an apprentice cut on the forward (outwards) stroke, and the hydraulic lift mechanism operated on the return stroke.

My Parkanson used to rotate clockwise when viewed from the right, and pretty sure it cut on the return stroke as all the swarf used to end up at the drive end.
