Buffalo Forge Drill
Hi,
I picked up a Buffalo Forge Post Drill the other day.
I'm wondering if I should leave it as is and use it for a decorative piece for outside or strip it back and paint it up for a decorative piece inside?
If I strip it back what would be the best way of de-rusting it? Molasses? Or a chemical alternative?
Ben.

Or, restore and use..... 🙂
I've had success with molasses, although smelly, and electrolysis. (quicker), and evaporust ($$$).
If you don't want to use it, then id at least derust and paint to preserve it for the next owner.
(a wire brush to start would reduce the load on whatever you use to clean up the rest)

I’m a fan of using Penetrol on bits and pieces that I want to protect but not lose the all over old steel look. A quick rub with a hand wire brush to take off any loose stuff then a couple of coats of Penetrol.
It gives a finish that looks similar to a lightly oiled surface rust, but dries completely and you can paint over it later if you want.
It’s about $30 at Bunnings for that 950ml tin. There’s a smaller one, but that size is better value and lasts me a couple of years with no issues of hardening in the tin etc.

I am a recent convert to citric acid.

I would clean it up and restore it.

Hi,
I think I'll break it down and put it into individual tubs of citric acid and see how it goes.
I'll paint it up eventually.

I've stripped most of the post drill but it's sitting at work under the welding table in tubs. Unfortunately life is getting in the way! I really do have to do something about it.
