Finish off the DRO set up, the x axis is not reading property when moving the x axis hand wheel. Have to see if i can find a user manual for the mitutoyo DRO. Also fabricated a chip guard for the mill.

Re those last pics of the machine getting back together. Well done. Doesn't it feel good to the stage that you have more back on the machine than scattered about the workshop!

It sure is starting to look like a mill again. Re the dog teeth - geeez. I have 'head rattle' on the BP - but not too bad. The cause is the dog teeth. Fortunately, they can be bought. Not very cheap at about $700 AUD but good you can still get em!

edit: I forgot to ask - what is the material you used for the chip guard and where did you get it?

    Thanks Greg,
Yeah it sue does feel good to get everything back together and have more room in the workshop. Can't wait to use the mill for the first time, need to start work on my trike project and will need a lot of machining done with the mill and lathe. Good for you that you got your mill up and running How does it compere to the chinese mill ? Sounds like you have the same problem that i have with the dog teeth, your lucky you can get a replacement part. I have to get one made up and will cost over $1,000 so will make my own part i have a lathe and a milling machine so why not make the part just collecting some tooling that i will need. As for the chip guard material i went to clark rubber.

    Cheers,
    Mark.

I had to shorten the quill spring as the new one was a bit to long, but work out well.

Bolted on the top housing on the mill head, just waiting for my local engineering shop to weld up a crack on the motor mount and she ready for a test run.

After two days i pulled apart the top part of the mill head to see how the oil flow went, all good, oil has drain onto the tapered bearings. So i think a bit more time the oil will make it's way down to all the bearings.

So i pre oiled all the bearings before assembly of the mill head, got the motor installed and did a test run all good for the speeds i have for now until i make up the new dog clutch gears. So i did a test on the suds pumps that's working and did try out the power table feeds, then about 2 minutes running it stop What the hell it was working just fine and now it stop, could not change speeds it felt like something has jam up inside the gearbox. So drain the oil out and remove the front cover and i got a big surprise i left a rag inside So pulled out the rag and had to remove the gearbox from the saddle, to hard to fit the front cover back on in the vertical position all good now So i can now say that this project is finish well almost still have some more work to do, but i can use the mill now to machine parts.

Thanks mate, Yeah happy at the moment still need to use it a bit more and see what problems will show up, still a lot more work to do on the mill. Since that rag incident i want to make those plastic shift levers out of brass will need to do some research on that project, will have the keg furnace finish soon so can do the casting myself. Also would like to add a power feed for the knee as well and of course make up new dog clutch gears. Did make up my first part on the mill for the quill power feed gearbox all good

    Cheers,
    Mark.

Time has come to start working on the mill again, been using it how it is but i need high speeds at the moment i have 600 rpm. So there is some issues to fix first on the list is the spindle pulley there is a oil cup that screws on top of the pulley as you can see in the pics oil is leaking out. The top of the pulley is slightly damaged.

I had Mr Tom at Bilonia Tooling help me out with the high speed dog clutch gears and pick them up today, he done a excellent job and at a good price, it pays to shop around. I also got him to fix up the spindle pulley as well so no oil leaks.

I remove the spindle today , the bearings feel good no bad noises or play but there is a little bit of damage on some of the other parts . Looks like a bearing has seized on the spindle at some time in the past.
