Who Has a Qualos lathe?
Who has a Qualos lathe tucked away???
Please post photos and serial numbers. I know of three Qualos lathes and they are a flat belt short bed, a geared head short bed (Which appears to be the same as the flat belt but with a geared head) and a 33" Geared head lathe which has a few slight changes and updates. The latter is a forum members which had a note of being levelled in 1951 I think. I'm curios to try and put together some data on years, models and variations.
From http://www.lathes.co.uk/qualos/
Short bed flat belt vs Long Bed
This version I believe has the very bottom flange of the bed casting with a bull nose edge. It also has two bolt heads either side of the brass thread plate. The tailstock is locked with a nut.
Oil holes no nipples? and less of them. Also metal fed wheels.
I'm curious to know what the key hole looking thing is here as I haven't seen it before.
The later model 33" geared head lathe with Cam lock tail stock.
Locking lever on saddle, machined flat on saddle with raised disc vs inset disc. At the very bottom of this photo you can see an oil nipple, this is on a protrusion in the casting that is not on earlier lathes, I've seen. Here you can see at the front one original bakelite or similar feed wheel with brass knob (chrome worn off).
Correct top slide feed wheel.
The ebossed lettering is absent on the earlier model, the short beds at least.
The brass name plate with serial numbers on the gear covers also changed design.…..Live a Quiet Life & Work with your Hands

Be interesting to know if any of the Junior parts were interchangeable with the larger lathes.

I have one very similar to the short bed in the first picture. Serial number in the 80's but I cannot remember what. Seems solid enough. Greased bearings in the headstock. I see that in the picture provided there is a star-shaped wheel on the apron. Is that for engaging the half-nuts? I do not have that. Instead I use the lever on the left of the apron. Not sure what that is in the background in the middle of the lathe bed, I don't have that. It has an MT2 taper in the tailstock but it is unclear what it is in the headstock.

Joe. star shaped bit on the apron is the screw to engage the leadscrew for auto feed.
On the middle behind the bed is the forward/off/reverse switch box.
The later models list the headstock to be a 3 Morse taper, I assume the earlier one would be the same.
Photos of your would be great.…..Live a Quiet Life & Work with your Hands

The base on this is not one I've seen before. And hydrolic variable speed ? Perhaps an owner mod base and drive...

That's a qualos junior, a much smaller machine. I think they pinched the stand from something else.

This turned up today at the Mens Shed.
Apart from a couple of broken hand wheels and dodgy braze fixes to breaks in the cast iron covers it appears to be in fair shape for its age.
It's been converted to a V-belt drive and has an ancient 1440 RPM motor - the new motor must have been a 6 pole as the higher 1440 RPM speeds are scratched underneath the original speeds.
The former owner is an 85 year old member of the shed who has had it for about 30 years and hardly used it during that period.
It should fill a nice gap between the baby Myford, rescued from a skip and restored by another 85 year old members, and the almost new AL336D which only a few members are allowed to drive.
At some stage we are getting a Hercus in excellent condition.

On the tailstock at the front and the end facing the chuck you will see a litte knob.
Pull it up and out and it will have a small taper on the end with ons side ground flat. Basically the hole should be a small oil owl and you daub oil onto your centres.
On some there was a matching knob on the headstock attached to a distinct, others just had a bolt.…..Live a Quiet Life & Work with your Hands
