Small post but I thought I would show you what the powers that be have given me to restore all of the above engines and associated equipment

Bantams seem to be flavour of the month; they're popping up everywhere. Have you used it yet Phil? What do you think?

Very happy with it Bryan. Machines beautifully. It could be at least 2 meters between centers and 600mm swing and maybe a 50mm spindle bore but "what ya gunna do". Still, it's a start

    Gentlemen.

A confirmation. Phil Thorn has agreed to show as around, next Sunday the 11th. This date suits the majority.

Sovereign Hill doesn’t open until 10.00 am. So that’s our start time.

If we could assemble up, out the front of the main entrance any time after 9.30 ish. Pick a point say 20 - 30 metres out, so we stay out of the crowd. If we could all aim to be there by 10.00, that would be good.

I have 11 on the list.

    Greg /kwijibo99
    Greg Q +
    Mike G
    Ken J +
    His cousin.
    Joe H
    Peter H
    Jayson W
    Marko
Ray G (Is Josh coming along?)
    Me.
That’s 11 plus the possibility of Josh. (Rays email bounces me). We have a pass for 12. I’ll probably confirm with you all by email as well.

    See you there next weekend.

    Regards Phil.

    Hi Phil,

Josh would love to be there, but he's going to be doing contract work somewhere down on the peninsula that weekend.

I'll take some pictures for him..

    Regards
    Ray

Should be a good day gentlemen, looking forward to it.
Stuart, lock in september for the reunion. I have a feeling that will make up for the guys that can't make it on the 11th.

Nice machine but a leeeetle undersized for the tasks, perhaps.

How much tooling did you get? I think I have a brand new D1-3 faceplate somewhere as I got 3 with my Chipmaster. I've already given 1 away, you're welcome to the remaining spare as I'll never need it.

    Hi PDW,
    lol just a bit undersized.
I didn't get any tooling although it has a quickchange tool post but the homemade tool holders don't quite fit. I have donated some of my own tooling and when required will bring a live centre etc etc etc in from home to do a (small) machining job.
We got a faceplate with the lathe but as has happened a couple of times I can only machine as time permits and if a job is already set up on the faceplate I have to remove it to set up the next job to get an engine or pump running. The remaining spare you have would be fantastic and gratefully received.

You need one of these babies. That's a 28" faceplate.

I'll look in the box of assorted stuff that I haven't unpacked in 10 years. I'm pretty sure the spare faceplate is in there somewhere.

I got 10 chucks, 3 faceplates and a P-B EC collet chuck with my Chipmaster plus a pile of other assorted tooling. All 4 of the 5" P-B 3 jaw chucks were stuffed but the 4 jaw ones were OK. I only use a 3 jaw chuck as a last resort so I've never bothered trying to find out if they're worth tweaking. The collet chuck is almost a permanent fixture.

The light duty P-B 4 jaw chucks in 6" & 8" size are perfect for these size machines.

If your toy has the Dickson QCTP then the tool holders are often available from the UK but you'd better be sitting down when you price them. I've been meaning to make a pile of blanks on the mill as I've got the 90 deg cutters etc but it's too far down the project list ATM.

    Hi PDW,
I could use the 28" faceplate because all I would have to do is get the 9" and cut a big section out of the bed so it wouyld fit and if the headstock spindle sheared off I could just weld it back on and the lathe would still be as useful as it is now. Still, I could make little brass lubricators on it which funnily enough I have to make anyway.
Why couldn't I get as many bits as you did when we got ours. It came with a four jaw, three jaw, faceplate and driving plate. Oh, and a nice littla hardened and ground dead centre that is now soft and has a very flat nose and a lovely blue colour that cascades back towards the morse taper. Seems my apprentice didn't like my advice and thought a drop of oil on the outside would do.
The QCTP is actually a Colchester, well thats what it says on the badge.

    Hi Richard,
I wish you could attend too. Just make sure you are available for the reunion in September.
I am sure there will be lots of photos of machinery that I normally don't get a chance to visit. Sunday is my day off so we are going to be everywhere including some places not normally on display.

Default Oh my god I'm buggered

A big pat on the back to our host, Phil, who escorted us around Sovereign Hill. What a mighty bloke he is, the handle bar moustache, the packet of rollies, and a great enthusiasm for fine machinery, a man's man.

We kicked off at 10:00am, well 10:02, Greg was 2 minutes late, and in we went. Sovereign Hill is amazing, everything is as authentic as it can be, including real horse sh.t on the road. Even the aroma takes one back 100 years.

The steam engines, that Phil loves and maintains, are fabulous. Priceless pieces of history brought back to life.

I'm not going to go into all the details, hopefully other forum members will because I can't back anything up, no camera.

Suffice to say, it was a great day for a dozen blokes, enthusiastic enough to haul their bones up steep hills, and down dale to area's closed to the riff raff. That's not us.

Thanks Phil and the other Phil, for his organizing efforts.

Ken (Arboga) as I've been nicknamed.
