Hi, I'm Paul. Glad to be here.
Just thought I'd introduce myself quickly.
I live on the Gold Coast.
I recently inherited an Emco Compact 8 from my dad who passed away in July. It has been mostly idle for the last twenty years and some of the parts had some rust. I have managed to clean most of it up now and am in the process of learning how to use it.
I am pretty new to machine work, and clearly have a steep learning curve, however I have had the odd occasion to use lathes in the past for minor jobs.
I have started to make some upgrades, including a quick change tool post and bellows for the ways. I will be investigating stepper motors for the lead screw and possibly the cross slide too. CNC possibilities will have to wait until I have a bit more time.
Apart from that, I have a 3D printer, which I use a lot, and some woodwork machines that I get to use occasionally.
For work, I build custom websites ( I have a long career in computers) and buy and sell cars as a licensed dealer.

I did motor vehicle wholesaling years ago and built a new small car yard , ran out of money building it and then sold it and left the industry. I still buy and sell a few cars here and there as a side hussle. I think once its in your blood you cannot get it out. A lot more competition around nowadays. Good luck with the metalworking.

Yeah, I hear you. I'm only doing the cars on the side for now, and it doesn't make sense to get a lot if you're not turning over a fair number each week. I've also devised a computer based system to help me evaluate cars from data that I collect from various places, and this should give me a bit of an edge. Plus, I am willing to go for cars other dealers won't, like some of the European ones that can be very expensive to fix. I'm also sure that having a lathe might help me out of a tight spot here and there.

Gidday Paul. Welcome to the forum.
How were you going to do the bellows?
(e.g. Just buy an existing moulded shape? 3D print frame to attach canvas to?)

Hi paul,
I'm on the Gold Coast too (Currumbin)
While I'm not a machinist, I'm happy to share any information I may have
I suggest you explore a Diamond Toolpost set up, and I'm happy to show mine in action, if youre curious
regards
Brian
