Hello
G'day everyone,
I've been a tinkerer and enjoyed working with my hands from as far back as my memory serves, starting out in my dad's shed, albeit with fairly rough tools. I'm a semi retired mechanical engineer and although I drove a desk for decades, for years I had access to a basic metalworking shop together with an extensive tool room. I took full advantage of the opportunity on a regular basis, mostly during lunchtimes and after hours. Like many here, I suppose, my mind generates far too many 'I can make that' ideas for my own good! As a young engineer with my work desk often covered with 'foreigner' or 'bodgie' works-in-progress, my qualified toolmaker work colleagues would often give me a ribbing, 'Who do you think you are, a bloody foreman!' I have those same colleagues, many of who remain amongst my closest friends, to thank for sharing their practical machining knowledge.
Anyway, now that there's more free time available to devote to my own interests, I have a few metalworking projects in the pipeline as well as setting up some additional machinery/equipment in the home workshop.
Cheers
Salv

Hi Salv
Welcome to the MetalWork forums.
We have great bunch here very helpful and supportive of one another. You will find many like minded folk here, perhaps with same interests as you.
If you explore our pages you will find bits and pieces of interesting things all over the place.
Go to the FORUM box at top LH corner and click on it.
A drop down menu appears and you can select Forum Home at the top of the drop down menu list. Scan down the pages to look at what we have.
Please make an effort to read the Terms of Use -our Rules - pretty standard for many forums these days.By joining the forum its automatic that they apply to you as a member.
Not having read the the TOUs won't be of help if a rule is infringed.
Sometimes the soft ware works so you can't post pics or links until 10 posts are made ( or such links and pics are cleared by a mod)
Its anti spam thing.
There are all sorts of forums that might be parallel with your interests, found as described above.
If any questions contact me via PM and I'll try to help you.

Welcome Salv. Your background sounds similar to mine. I started out as a experimental researcher at a Uni which I really enjoyed especially if there was anything to be made. Unfortuintley I got dragged into teaching and also ended up driving a desk for about 10 years. I always liked interacting with the Departmental workshop and technical people and would generally prefer to sit and talk to them at tea and lunch times as well as using the workshops after hours. One of our techs was a machinist on the team that made one of the first Concorde Prototype engines and was a gold mine of info. I used to like to sit next to him in hope I might just absorb something useful.
Anyway I think you will find a lot of similarly minded folks on this forum.

Hello
Thanks Bob. I seem to gravitate to people who have a DIY streak, preferably but not necessarily in a workshop sense, and are capable of producing something tangible. That's just my nature.
