    Smile Hi, I'm Roy

Searching for a Kondia Mill manual brought me to this forum.
I trained in the RNZAF, initially as an Aircraft Technician, then Machine Tool Setter & Operator. Late in my career, while teaching machining, I achieved civilian qualifications, Trade & Advanced Trade Certificate.
As an aside, the RNZAF training school used Australian made Hercus lathes, what a great machine for the job!
Twenty one years in uniform was enough. I got out & got a real job, sole machinist at a small general engineering & fabrication shop. That only lasted 3 months, the local civil aircraft Maintenance Repair Organisation tracked me down & I spent 10 years running the Engine & Prop Shop machine shops and engine cleaning facility. That ended badly when they purchased an Asian computer system.
I took a job as a fitter at a local engineering general company doing irrigation plant maintenance. Within weeks I was promoted into a management vacancy which kept me run off my feet for two years until the GFC in 2009 had us laying off staff.
I was then offered a job teaching aircraft engineering in the Middle East. That lasted 3 years and we came home to the first job I could find.
Back on the floor as a maintenance fitter at a local solar salt manufacturing plant, maintaining plant & equipment that is rusting away in front of your eyes can be a bit soul destroying on one hand, but satisfying on the other.
Then another management position was advertised at the general engineering company I had left in 2009, this time running a team building freeze dryers. I knew squat about refrigeration, but had a great team who knew their jobs, they taught me plenty!
After nine years of that, I have retired. I work two days a week in the machine shop, doing stuff I know something about, and the rest of my time is consumed with old motorcycle building, some for me, more for others.
I have a Kondia manual mill, an HG 28, 280 x 750 lathe, a Delapena bench hone and a bit of welding gear in a 100m Sq workshop attached to my house. Life is good.

    Salt manufacturing for industry?
Or drying/processing mined salt products (like edible table salt)

Hi Steve, yes, I was teaching Basic Engineering Machining initially until 1 TTS moved in from Hobsonville, then the whole trade. I would need to look back at my records to confirm the years, but yes, '90's. Yes, Guzzis, BMW sidecar, Vincent, had the frame in the TTS workshop for a while. ???

100m2, Yes, with hydronic underfloor heating to maintain a steady 20deg for winter.

https://dominionsalt.co.nz/ dries salt from sea water using wind & sun. Product is used for industry, food, medical, you name it. During very occasional lean harvest years they have imported mined salt from Australia to process.

    Small world Roy!
I joined as a CET and got promoted (too) early - was in maintenance with Tim Dagg and Tracey etc and also teaching flight controls and aerodynamics.
Was into triathlons at the time.
Recall the infamous “Devon ate the battery cart” incident??
Moved to Melbourne in ‘92 to work at ASTA, then ended up in IT around 2000 where I’ve been ever since.
Great to hear you’re going well.

    Hello Roy

It is great to have like minded people on the Forum.
I Jointed the Australian Air Force in 1987 as a young apprentice Instrument fitter. I got out in 2013 but still work as a reservist restoring old aircraft and have had jobs with Boeing and Northrop Grumman.

I am also into bike and have owned a Guzzi and currently have a 2015 Bonneville and 3/4 of a 1948 Indian Chief.

I have recently purchased a Kondia mill that was not running. Hopefully it will be in a few weeks. I ended up with manuals so let me know if you need anything in particular.

    Kind regards

    Steve

    Hi Steve,
Thank you. Is your Kondia a manual or CNC type? I downloaded a CNC Kondia manual from here, it wasnt a great deal of use unfortunately. What I am looking for specifically, in the short term, is the recommended oil spec for the variable speed X axis power feed gearbox. I would value any information regarding adjustments of screws & gibs shortly as well. It is long overdue some adjustments.
I am also having problems with the self oiling pump, the shaft seal is leaking and it's an odd size, I may have to resign myself to adapting another pump to it.

Which parts of your Indian Chief are missing? It was about 1948 or 49 that Indian & Vincent colluded on fitting a Vincent engine into a Chief, I think that would be a great conversion.

    Regards,
    Roy

    Hello Roy,

Mine is a manual type with a variable speed head.

The main thing I am chasing for my Indian is a good front cylinder. Apart from that it is time that I need and it will be together.
The motor I am building is not stock and I don't have a spare Vincent engine under the bench. If you have a cheap one I would take it of your hands.

The oil spec for the feed box is Shell Carnia Oil 35 or Socony Gargoyle Vactra Oil and Heavy Oil.

    Keep well

    Steve
