Hi from Bisbane
Al here.
Been dipping in and out of here for a while, but never got to introduce myself.
My work life was mainly in electrical and control products, with plenty of admin to keep me away from hand skills, so this is a new adventure.
Finally retired, I hope, and keen on getting to build a steam engine.
Have an old South Bend lathe that may be up to the task, but not really skilled enough to know yet.
Hoping to ask a few queries on the journey as I get into the projects. Seems a pretty knowledgeable bunch here.
Thanks
Al

Hi Al,
Congratulations on your retirement - you'll be busier now than ever. Hope the lockdown is not getting in your way.
Will the steam engine power your workshop or pull carriages? Either way, it'll keep you out of mischief and I look forward to seeing your progress.
Regards
Jack

Hi Alh01.
Welcome to our MetalWork Forums.
We have great bunch here very helpful and supportive of one another. You will find many like minded folk here with same interests as you.
There is a dedicated HERCUS lathe sub forum which I believe you will find handy as I understand that Hercus models were cloned /copied/ based upon the South Bend Lathes. I favor HSS tooling as it is cheap ,versatile and can be sharpened and modified to use on specific tasks.
If you explore our pages you will find bits and pieces of interesting things all over the place.
Go to the FORUM box at top LH corner and click on it.
A drop down menu appears and you can select Forum Home at the top of the drop down menu list. Scan down the pages to look at what we have.
Please make an effort to read the Terms of Use -our Rules - pretty standard for many forums these days.By joining the forum its automatic that they apply to you as a member. Not having read the the TOUs won't be of help if someone does not follow them.
Sometimes the soft ware works so you can't post pics or links until 10 posts are made ( or such links and pics are cleared by a mod)
Its anti spam thing.
There are all sorts of forums that might be parallel with your interests, found as described above.
If any questions contact me via PM and I'll try to help you.

Workshop Steam Power
Thanks Jack. The retirement has been a while coming, and now wanting to get used to it.
Keeping the expectations reasonable for now, and stationary Bolton designs to start with. May be enough to power a few LED lights.
DO confess to a liking for the old QGR PB15s that pottered around in my youth. They seemed to be such simple but reliable designs. On the project list now.
Rgds
Al
