    Post FNG from Adelaide

    Hey all,

New guy from Adelaide looking to get myself set up with a lathe. I'm at the point now where I need to start doing it rather than just reading books and watching YouTube videos. I think I've watched almost everything by Tom Lipton, Joe Pieczynski, et al. over the years. I usually watch them at 2x speed to save time!

It's the precision aspect of turning and machining in general that appeals to me. I want to learn how to cut threads and make precision parts just for the sake of doing it really, not because I necessarily have any grand projects in mind. That said, the practical advantages of owning a lathe are not lost on me. It'd be great to be able to just cut up and face to length some aluminium tube when I need a new handlebar for my motorcycle, for instance. I race a Ninja 300 and, from time to time, I do find myself needing new handlebars and foot pegs, etc. I've made some parts up on my Dad's lathe (a Hercus 9") in the past. Once I have a bit of proficiency, I'm sure it'll be easy to come up with ideas for projects. I already have some ideas but first thing's first; learn the basics.

I haven't had much luck finding a lathe yet. I don't want to spend *huge* dollars - thinking $2-3k but could go more for decent machine - so I'm mostly looking at the second hand market. A Hercus 260 would be my ideal (I think) but I haven't seen one for sale in SA yet. I've been keeping my eye on Gumtree, Facebook marketplace, machines4u.com.au, and mgs.net.au but there's not heaps around. If anyone knows of something that would be good for a beginner, give me a shout!

Well, that's all for now. See you around!

    Welcome.

Also look on graysonline. They have SA auctions with machinery from time to time. Give Alan Chamberlain a call at General Tools (mention i sent you over). He is a 2nd hand Machinery dealer and has quite alot of stuff in the shed. Might have something to suit.

I've been in to General Tools a few times over the last couple months just to see what new machines they have in. I've met Alan a couple times. He had an ML10 last time I was there. I was initially interested, thinking that an ML10 would be a slightly *bigger* version of an ML7, but when I got home and looked it up I had to pass. Might pop in next week and see if there's anything new. Will keep an eye on graysonline too. Cheers!
