Default Introducing Myself and my new (old) Macson lathe

Hi All, Just thought I'd say hi. I actually signed up for this forum 11 years ago and somehow forgot... Any today I picked up my new (very old lathe) It's the first lathe I have owned myself, I have used them at work but never had my own. I picked it up with a big 3 phase bench grinder and a 3 phase plasma cutter for $2100. It's an old Macson. I'm not exactly sure of the age but I'm guessing 50s? Maybe earlier. She's done a fair bit of work but seems in reasonable condition. The guy I bought if off says it machines a "very slight taper" I couldn't verify this for myself but I thought for the money I'll see what it does and if it can be improved. In one of the the biggest face-palm moments I can remember, I was informed the apprentice threw the steady for it in the scrap metal when the company moved buildings. The other issue with it is the tail stock is missing its gib. I'm hoping I can just get one made. I'm looking forward to doing a restoration on it and bringing back to at least somewhere close to its former glory. In any case I think it's a beautiful bit of gear.

My first lathe was one of these. Good solid machine. Be careful with the feed overload clutch as its not light enough to save the apron in a crash

Hi, I've had a read of a lot of your posts about your lathe. I'm a complete novice when it comes to these things so I'll be reading all I can here. I notice your spindle speeds are up to 300 rpm higher than mine. Mine has a 1500 rpm motor and the max spindle speed is 800. I'm intending to give my lathe a full strip and overhaul. Did you ever get a user or parts manual for yours?

I just saw this ad on Gumtree that has 14" Macson in the list of manuals so might be worth asking?

BTW - your PM inbox is full so will need trimming.

They are a pretty simple machine so I think you will be okay without a manual. Feel free to ask me any questions although its been a few years since I sold mine.
