    Default Hi...........again!

Hi, this is Jayne, again. Sorry for starting a new welcome thread. My posts seem to disappear when I submit them and starting a new welcome thread seems to be the only way for me to reply. I have made two replies to my original welcome thread and have also tried starting a new thread in the Hercus Area, all of which vanish when I press the submit button. A pop up message appears but doesn’t stay on the screen long enough for me to read what it says. Am I doing something wrong? I’ve had a read through the terms of use but didn’t notice anything restricting new members from replying to posts. Sorry again for this additional welcome thread.

    Jayne

    Hi Jayne.

Welcome to the MetalWork Forums.I am sorry you have had trouble.
Possibly some form of auto moderation may have kicked in. Usually it is operative when a new member attempts to post a photo, a video or a link, something that is not usually possible until the new members 10th post.

Understand that it is more of a anti spam measure to protect the forum against post that do it damage, not a measure against our new members.

If you need to post a pic and it does not post, PM me and I can manually lift the moderation.

To have look at the variety of what the forums can offer, do this:

Goto the FORUM box in the top left hand cnr of the page and click the down arrow. This will bring up a pull down menu that has Forum Home at the top

Click Forum Home which will present a scroll down page.

Our rules, the Terms of Service are right at the top , please take the time to read them.

Below that are all the various areas and sub forums that make up our MetalWork forums.

We would love to know what elements of metalwork that interest you and what sort of tools and machines you have.

We have a very helpful membership many of them who go out of the way to assist fellow members with enquiries or even one on one help.
This is why we encourage to be specific with localities.

For example, instead of saying Brisbane it betters to say a specific suburb and sometimes we have members who live in a nearby location can pop over a help in demonstrating a skill or technique. That is always better than describing a how to in text.

    Again ,welcome

    Grahame

Hi Grahame, thank you for the welcome and the explanation. It seems to be the auto moderation that I was having trouble with. I understand the need for such moderation to try and keep undesirable posts out. It's a very minor inconvenience for legitimate new members which is totally fine by me. The two replies I made on my other welcome thread have now appeared but the thread I tried to start in the Hercus Area is not there, probably due to the 3 photos I attached to the message. Is it a problem to have two welcome threads? Should one be removed or perhaps merge the two together?

So a little more about me. I am an aircraft engineer by trade, working for a large Aussie airline with an attachment to kangaroos . Thanks to covid, like many others, I have not had a job to go to for the majority of last year and a good chance to only have the equivalent of 50% of my normal shifts for the foreseeable future. All the extra time has been an opportunity to find some new hobbies. One of those hobbies is guitar building which has brought me lots of stress relief and enjoyment. Yesterday I became the new owner of my newest hobby, restoring a vintage lathe. I have wanted a metal lathe for a very long time but never managed to buy one. The closest I came was about 4-5 years ago when a Hercus 9" lathe came up on gumtree. It was located only a few suburbs away from me and looked to be loved and in excellent condition with some tooling, but I hesitated too long and it got sold. I am still disappointed missing out on that one. I don't have any experience operating a lathe but always wanted to learn and something abut vintage lathes has a very strong appeal to me.

The lathe I bought is a bar bed type and from the information I found on the lathes.co.uk site, it is a Hercus/Burden Bagear bar-bed lathe. It doesn't have any brand markings on it, which leads me to believe it is the Bagear version. I'm excited to have this restoration project to tinker with. I don't have any specific need for a lathe however, I'm sure once it is operating properly, then I will find a use for it.
