Default New guy in the Perth Hills

    Hi
Just joined the forum so thought I should say hello and give a brief rundown of what/who I am.
I'm 64 and I retired a couple of years ago with a dodgy back but still like to spend as much time as I can working around my property and in my workshop.
I was born in New Zealand but then lived 20 odd years in the UK before moving to Perth over 40 years ago.
I had a rather checkered career but mostly worked as an electronic/mechanical technician. In the last few years I worked as a mechanical 3D CAD designer/draftsman/technician for an electronics manufacturing company.
About a year ago I acquired a Harrison 13" 165 lathe (1973 vintage) and I've spent most of my time since then doing a ground up restoration and converting to single phase with a VFD. I think it came out quite well in the end and I'm now gradually improving my limited turning skills and knowledge. As you can see, I'm still at the stage of keeping the machine ridiculously clean but I expect to eventually get over that!

I've also been looking for a decent milling machine to restore but they just don't seem to come up very often in Perth at a reasonable price - so last week I bit the bullet and bought a new Hafco HM54. I went in to it with my eyes open as I've had a fair bit of experience with what sort of quality to expect with Chinese equipment. I've found that the best approach with Chinese stuff is to go right through it from top to bottom when it is new and re-assemble, de-burr, repair and re-align as necessary before starting to use it. Of course you shouldn't have to do this with a new machine but it seems the only way to get it right and end up with a fairly good machine at a reasonable price.
    Cheers
    Andy Perry
