Hi all, from a GMF grinder restoration Newbie
Hi all.
The names Gera from Sydney. Im recently unemployed and using this time to aquire and refurbish/restore tools.
ive notices that the industrial tools that are being thrown out by companies and people, run just aswell if not better than most of the tools i have. But they dont break down as much as the tools i have.
Anyways.... have recently aquired a GMF 8" utility Grinder.
Aside from the obvious surface rust it still seems to run well. The capacitor is rusted and the bearings need changing. Gonna strip it down and see what else needs to be done.
I would greatly appreciate ANY help any one can offer me in regard to this brand and this product.

We are fortunate to have a group of big hearted and helpful folk here.
There are a few members who have refurbed GMF bench grinders over the years, so hopefully one or two of them may be along to help you.
There are a few variations of the GMF bench grinders so a pic might be helpful if you are able to attach one. They were very well thought of as bench grinders.
Companies bought tools that lasted in the past. It is a sign of the times that is easier/cheaper to junk the older worn equipment and buy new,but the good quality tools are now worth an arm an a leg so the ones bought now are of a poorer quality than than the worn out ones.
Capacitors and bearings don't appear to be hard to obtain. I think the original paint colour might prove a bit harder.
Welcome to the group
Grahame

I have done a few GMF grinders to date (and have four waiting on the bench) and they're pretty straight-forward on the inside - take photos as you go and note the orientation of the spindles and which end cap is on which end, as some of them have different arrangements on either end around the bearings and it beats being confused on reassembly as to which way it all went.

Oh, and if you want to see some info on GMF here's a history I have pieced together:
https://motofaction.org/tool-reviews...ishers-mowers/
I have received a couple of brochures and catalogues since putting that together and will go back and updated it when I get the time!

Also this grinder dosnt have a cover for the right side or the attachments to hold the glass screens, would appreciate any help on how or who I could get in contact with to sourcing some.
Id like My grinder to be whole when i have finished fixing her up. 😀

This is the one I restored.
A bit newer than yours, I guestimated 70's.
AFAIK it is complete other than the spark arrestor top flaps which I made, and the rocket switch which I added (had an old circuit breaker switch prior to this).
