    Default Cloth insulation tape.

A while back I made two wiring harnesses, one for ignition, the other for lights. I wrapped both up in plastic insulation tape, not an easy job keeping the cables straight and in the same order for the harness length. I managed that reasonably well, but after wrapping the harnesses were s tiff as a board and twisted.

This morning some cloth insulation tape arrived, so I cut the old plastic stuff off and wrapped both harnesses in the cloth tape, boy what a difference. The harnesses are now quite straight, pliable and easier to thread through the frame. Big improvement. Good stuff this cloth insulation tape.

Tomorrow I'll solder on some more terminals for the rear end, shorten a couple of leads and hook everything up.

The tape had to come from China of course, couldn't find and suppliers in Oz. So many things you just can't buy in Australia, Go down the street to buy cable, terminals, bearings and so on, visit half a dozen shops and come home empty handed. No
wonder everyone is turning to online shopping, usually from overseas sellers.

I was looking for cloth tape today and saw your post. Which supplier did you get it through. It saves a lot of stress knowing you had good results as there are heaps to choose from.

    Thanks Steve

I couldn't find any in Oz, so got some from China on ebay. Not that it would have made much difference, had I found some in Oz, it would have come from China anyway.

The photos are not clear enough to be sure its exactly what I have but I ordered something similar from SuperCheapAuto and have been using it for a while now. IIRC, It just costed 5 or 6 Aussie bucks back then and it was ready for pickup at my local store in a couple of days.

Just search for "Car Builders Fleece Tape". I remember spending a long time searching for cloth tape but the results always showed results from overseas suppliers.

Appears to be the same thing that the OP has posted.

If you do a search on eBay for:

Tesa Tape 51036 High Temp 150°c Engine Bay Wiring Cable Looms Wiring Harnesses

Comes up with an Aussie supplier. Not cheap but top quality.

I ordered a few rolls from different Chinese suppliers, but this stuff goes a long way. The roll I'm using at the moment is really good stuff, very, very sticky, you have to be careful not to tear it when unwinding off the roll. I had to remove some from another harness I made, not very successful and quite difficult as I couldn't see where the end was to start unravelling, so I had to cut it open then peel it off. incredibly sticky clumps of cloth and glue stuck in places so I had to use alcohol to remove it. Very impressive stuff.

I happened to have the latest Autobarn cattledog open on the table at lunchtime - and saw they have a couple of flavours of cloth loom tape.

    Standard stuff (Voltage brand) https://autobarn.com.au/ab/Autobarn-...1915/p/EL33089

    Underbody type (Carbuilders brand) https://autobarn.com.au/ab/Autobarn-...--UBT/p/142430

Interesting the comments about the cloth tape being very sticky. Many years ago I bought plastic loom tape - and it basically had no adhesive. It was intended to be stretched slightly and be able to be removed without dealing with that horrible sticky residue of normal insulation tape. It was definitely just plastic, and not a self-amalgamating type.

Many businesses advertise items they supposedly stock, but go into the store and you'll be sadly disappointed. Bunnings is a classic example. Before I head out to buy workshop stuff I generally check online to see if they have what I want, many a time, try most of the time, After driving around from outlet to outlet I return home empty handed. Then turn to ebay. And shop keepers complain about losing business to online shopping, they are their own worst enemy.
