Satin Black Chassis Paint
Hello fellow metalworkers
I am after experiences for painting a chassis Satin Black. I don't want to use 2k or KBS/POR15 as these contain Isocyanides.
I am considering something like metalshield but am not sure if it would be up to the task.
I will be using a product call Feronite rusty metal primer for rust protection so am after a chip/scratch resistant satin black paint that can be brushed or sprayed.
Durability is more important than looks.

I’m in the same situation - for an old Landrover chassis.
For last one I did I used a 3M product from Supercheap - pretty sure it was just called “chassis black”.
It’s been great - 10 years later it’s still going well. It also handles brake fluid pretty well.
Unfortunately Supercheap no longer stock it, and I haven’t been able to find another supplier.
They have a Septone chassis paint but I’ve no experience with it.
I’m keen to hear what you end up going with.

Further to my earlier post regarding the 3M paint not being available, this is what I was thinking of giving a go.
NB: Not to be confused with their "Chassis Black" product which isn't a paint - just a bitumous coating.
Septone - Paints and Panels - Complete - Paints - Subframe Black 1L Paint
I'd be keen to try an industrial product, but generally they come in a min of 4L so the remainder would likely go off and get thrown out before it got used.

I will save you the stress and not put the black SDS up. If you don't know it cant hurt you.
On the bright side it mainly gets absorbed through the lungs and eyes.

The only brand I have used is Wattyl and I am happy with it, on a off road buggy I built for a friend and after three years it is still acceptable, I have also used it on a couple of vices with equally acceptable results.

Valspar 'Industrial Mix' IMU.TB 543. 2K SS. Excellent stuff.
Yes it may not suit you because it's a 2K, but I thought other people might like to know about it.
It's a 2-pack Single Stage (SS), -you can spray it directly onto the metal (but it's fine over primer as well).
I reckon you could brush it too. Very good for things like motorbike frames.
But being a 2K it may be a worry for you healthwise.
I spray outdoors using a mask, so I can't spray in winter or windy days, (and my 1 1/2 lungs are stuffed anyway, lol).

For what it's worth, I refuse to run any subframe black from any manufacturer through my spray gun. It's the cheapest, nastiest rubbish ever put in a tin. I would give my vote to your original choice of Metalshield to be honest. It is slow to dry being turps based, but man o man is it tenacious. In a previous life I built truck trays for a living and while the major parts were 2 Pack painted, the tray floors were painted with Metalshield rolled on. I saw trade ins 5 or more years old where the paint was still well and truly present and serviceable. I'm not the biggest fan of ag enamel as it is a low end enamel, although it is light years ahead of subframe black.

Steve no matter what paint you use you breath fumes in and absorbs when PPE is not worn. He says having sprayed 2-pac not long after it was released wearing overalls and a respirator filtered of course. The school next door complained to owner of the depot. When I explained to Joe how toxic it could be that was the end of 2-pac back to normal enamel.
However being the tight wad he was I had t use up the tins we had bought to respray vehicles with.
School warned every time, windows shut. Me dressed up looking like something from outer space with goggles mask and Vaseline spread to exposed surfaces as advised by paint supplier who had only just found out themselves late 70's.
Roll on 10 years and suits full respiration enclosed spray booths became mandatory.
I've seen many pro painters as well as backyard guys spray enamel even water based paints and as soon as done rip off the mask 1st breath and they suck in fumes. One bloke had sprayed the internal of a pantec fumes engulfed him done he walked the open rear doors took his mask off and lite up a cigarette He saw the shocked look on my face and woke up quick. Not only would he have breathed in fumes but possible ignition, he quickly put out his caner stick. One of the guys who sprayed the buses and coaches where I did my apprenticeship would leave his mask on 15 to 20 mins after even while cleaning up.
Chassis Black is top stuff made for the purpose.
