MyFord Super 7 (AUD 1800) at New Castle (NSW)
MyFord Super 7 (AUD 1800) at New Castle (NSW)
Probably worth a look. Seems likes it’s neglected but appears all there. Can’t believe they have it pivoted on a jack stand.

The advertiser has not even used the correct keywords such as MyFord and I am assuming they don’t know much about it.
I am not affiliated with the advertiser in anyway.

Has a clutch - that is useful. No gearbox - I think. Single phase supply (240vot). Three jaw chuck only. No fixed or travelling steady. Extra gears - don't know. Does not look like a long bed Super 7. They are a bit rare.
Not a bad price if you are a "Myford tragic."

I have been waiting for a pristine condition Super 7 with a gear box and all the accessories at under $1000 price range (in my neighborhood since I need to inspect it before putting 100 hours of labour intensive restoration which at minimum wage (lets say $20 an hour) is about $2000 give or take) for around 10 years now
Probably never going to happen thanks to the hype around MyFord lathes over the internet. They are probably good lathes but “highly over valued by dealers and dreamers” (as one youtuber once phrased it).
Single phase is not that big a deal and if it bothers us much then a 3 phase replacement motor with a VFD will cost us less than the milling attachment for MyFord lathes
My gut feeling is that the accessories must be in a box/bin somewhere nearby. We cannot speculate anything looking at the photos or the listing. My immediate family members do not even know what my machine tools even do and probably would never know if the fixed steady or traveler steady or faceplate or collet chuck is an accessory for my lathe
I am not interested in this lathe but if it was local to me then I would have a look and offer what I feel is the right price. If I do not like the lathe or I can’t get a reasonable deal then I will just keep walking
Here is another example of an ML 7 at the $2500 price tag with a single phase motor and none of the cherished accessories. The advertiser posted it saying it belonged to his GrandFather and probably googled the brand and priced it to sell. Local to me but even getting it at half the listed price its not much of a bargain: Metal lathe myford ML7 on Gumtree Metal lathe myford ML7 | Power Tools | Gumtree Australia Salisbury Area - Salisbury Heights | 1301750800

I guess the previous buyer walked away since the add was deleted.
Looking at additional photos the current owners have no clue how to care for this lathe.
Chains wrapped around the bed (probably used to hoist it at some stage), tailstock appears to be broken (probably used as a lifting point at some stage). Crossslide being pivoted on an car jack stand.

A mate of mine passed away recently and he had an absolutely pristine one of these that only he had used from new and once his estate is sorted out I might make a bid on it. He had a 3 phase motor for it with a VFD (not fitted) and heaps of tooling so I guess they will want a fair bit for it. If I don't buy it I will give a heads up here so someone else can have a chance at a very nice lathe sitting on a proper stand that I guess came with the lathe.

I have always heard people wanting the long bed version whilst its not something on my must have list. I have read several references that state that the long bed version has a more stiffer and heavier bed casting to accommodate for the extra length of the bed but I have never seen an actual side by side comparison with a regular S7 or any actual measurements on how much just the casting thickness varies between the regular and the long bed versions or is it just changes in the composition of the casting.

The lathe in that advert is long gone.
I see you have revived this old thread after a couple of years. Things move fairly quickly in the machinery world.
Keep an eye on FB market place and sometimes Gumtree which is where most Myfords are posted for sale.
ML7’s are more common and often you may find a good bargain. S7’s are slightly rarer especially the MKII version with the wide guide and newer clutch and power cross slide. A gearbox version sells for slightly more.
There is also one on sale in VIC at a dealer: https://www.machines4u.com.au/view/a...-Lathe/911620/
Frankly speaking if space is not a concern then a Hercus 260 is within the same price range or cheaper and is a more capable lathe. Several of them have been sold at TAFE or school auctions at affordable prices.

Hi Kafie, Guys,
The machine in that advert doesn't have the gearbox either, or power crossfeed ! Its a first generation S7. From the pictures it seems that it has the early 4 jaw chuck as well, the newer ones have reversible jaws. Its also over priced by about 15 - 20%.
Your comments about the Southbend/Hercus are valid, there is very little to choose between them. The Myford long bed version is a slightly heavier casting and of course very little different, its no more rigid than a standard one.
In my opinion, of the three lathes the Southbend is probably the better one.Best Regards:

MyFord Super 7 (AUD 1800) at New Castle (NSW)
When I checked yesterday night that was the only S7 advertised for sale online across the country.
But the price is still a good baseline for what they are selling for these days.
A S7b + pxf sells for about 5K and the only Connoisseur (big bore) I have ever seen here sold for 12K.

Hi Kafie,
The Connoisseur, whilst still a Myford, is a quite different lathe ! Not just big bore, but a ball bearing headstock, power cross feed and a gearbox ! The last one I saw was in the 12K region. If I was going to pay that kind of money I would go for a Harrison or Colchester or similar.

One technical limitation is that its still a 3 1/2” center height lathe
Agree, much better lathes out there in that price bracket.
