I made several batches of similar style training weights for a personal trainer who was a former ADF Commando running a boot camp style program. The first batch were painted black. A few weeks later he asked if I could make another lot but this time paint them yellow and put a sticker on that read ‘Training Weight Only’. As a part of his brand he would run the classes in DPCU, him and six paying clients were bailed up in the street by Police because some muppet reported a gang of armed paramilitary roaming the streets.

This guy happen to be in western Sydney area?

This is also why I think appearance laws are stupid. It punishes scary looking things that might be harmless, but what you've really got to look out for are the things that appear harmless but actually aren't-a firearm dressed up like a nerf gun is the where the danger is, not a nerf gun dressed up like an M4

Both are dangerous though - walk into a public place holding a harmless scary looking thing and you will still get people wound up because it is a scary looking thing. You will also get a response from Police that assumes your scary looking thing is real.

Thanks to the situations that happen too often in the US, people are now conditioned to panic at the first sight of a firearm. Like a lot of you, I remember it being very different as a kid...

Does this mean I should not walk down Gympie Road at Chermside now with a shotgun in my hands, like I did about fourty years ago, because it needed repairs? There was a gun shop there as well as many other suburbs of Brisbane. BTW, it was loaded. It had jammed and not able to eject or fire the shell because a pin or something like that had broken.

But most of the time the appearance laws are applied to legal firearms that look too "military" like. They're more worried that something that can still go bang looks like one that can go bang bang bang than they are about something that can go bang looking like something that goes squirt

I used to sight in my 22 with live ammo in dads shed...

before that ...ride down the road on my treadly one handed hanging on to air rifle with the other...police were not scared back then as they never questioned you.

Guy I used to work with said when he was young in the 70s he would catch the train with rifle to Kiama, walk the hills shooting rabbits for the weekend then catch the train home with them. Even when I was young I did things with rifles that I wouldn't dream of now.

I'm not sure if things have gotten better or worse in that regard. I like that there are checks for firearm owners, safe storage etc, but I hate that this are so difficult with them these days and people think you have 2 heads if you own firearms. I make a point of not hiding the fact I shoot, hunt animals etc. I'm considered a nice guy and I'm a teacher, so I hope that it normalises shooting a little bit and that it's not just redneck types that are into it. Careful science teachers are into it also
