    Default Hercus 260 for sale

Selling on behalf of a school as I had stripped this lathe down to quote on a rebuild and fit guards to the machine, after the final quote they have decided to sell it as the finance guy does not think its a good investment . The main reason was because of the price of guarding and it needs a motor as the original 240 volt is stuffed, so I am selling this lathe at this stage with no motor on it although I do have a 1/2 hp 240 volt motor I can throw in with it, not sure how good that is though.

Price is $2600, the lathe has been fully stripped down, cleaned and inspected, overall it is in excellent condition with minimal wear on the bed, I don't think this has a lot of use over the years and the current teacher told me he doesn't think it was used for at least 10 years, I have replaced the spindle belt and countershaft bearings, spindle bearings are like new with no marks on them, bull gear and back gears look like the have never been used as they look to have been replaced at some point, all the gears in the gearbox are in excellent condition as are all of the parts in the apron, minimal backlash in the compound and cross slide and these have been machined to take end play out as well. Comes with a 240 volt contact switch and plug so fairly easy to fit a B56 frame motor as the holes are already drilled for it.

Price is based on what the school has asked for plus my time for rebuilding it, I have also replaced the top cover as the original was broken.

The lathe only has a 3 jaw chuck with key (no reverse jaws), catch plate, live centre, 3/8 spanner. Unfortunately the school has had their tooling go missing for the lathe.

Interstate buyers I am happy to deliver to transport yard but as I have previously sent lathes interstate I will not pack them on a pallet as I do not want the responsibility or liability of the pallet breaking and damaging the machine and you will need to organise your own transport.

    Cheers

    Steve

Steve looks like a great project for someone with $$$ but asking price is more than a new H&F lathe with the usual kit complete. Think the school needs to either find all the additional fittings or drop the price by $1600. Mate here bought one in just as good condition for $900.00 from a school last year.

Yeah sometimes people get lucky with bargains, even I have bought them for $600 and also paid up to $3000 for the rare ones but I have also put a lot of time into stripping it down and going through it all, this was a complete strip down and clean of everything and a few bits replaced as well

19724 was built mid to late 80s.

I agree $2600 is too much for a 260 without all the bling and a questionable thrown-in motor. But I think $900 is way too cheap.

I don't think comparisons with a new Chinese lathe are all that relevant. If you're in the market for an old Torana, you don't really care how much a new Great Wall costs.

Comparing a incomplete lathe to an incomplete vehicle with out the power to run it is much like the Great Wall like its name sake which is falling apart. The Torana just needs parts and depending on the model may as well have been built by those who build the Great Wall vehicles.

The school (teacher) obviously made a bad decision to have the machine rebuilt knowing the cost poor economy insight. If the machine has sat for 10yrs idle what a waste should have sold it off while all its parts were still intact fetching a far better $$$. Again poor insight on the schools part.

Imagine if the kids in those 10yrs had been taught how to care for and restore and keep it working and all parts together it might be worth more.

So $2600 for the lathe is a high price, I understand that, but when you consider the 30 hours I have put in to it and the parts that have been replaced as I didn't list everything ie gears in the gearbox and a few other things plus the fact that all the hard work is done and it just needs a motor, so if you bought a 260 for around 1500 then put 30 hours of time plus parts and had to change the motor to 240 volt from 3 phase then it's not really too bad a price, a friend of mine sold 2 recently for 3000 each and I know he didn't go as far on the rebuild as I did as far as pulling apart the gearbox and apron.

Ok folks... There's a buyer for almost everything, at almost any price. Maybe not here but who knows.

However that's enough discussion of the price, either buy it, make an offer or move on.
    Sheesh!!!
