For sale - HuanYang 220V 1.5KW VFD
Model is HY01D523B
This has seen very little use, for 1-3 phase power so I can check if 3 phase motors are in running order, but I have powered it up regularly to keep the innards in good order. As far as I know it works as new. That's based on test-running of motors using the touch switches and the speed control knob built into this VFD. Case has a few scratches on one side.
Selling because it's mostly just hanging around and better to pass it on given that my shed is packed to overflowing.
Comes with original handbook and various printed docs that relate to this series of HY models.
Also, there is a lot of info on the forum about these VFDs.
$30 + postage, though I would prefer local pickup (Sydney inner West) to save packing it.
Photos are a bit small but I can post bigger ones if anyone wants more detail.
Bill

Hi Bill
i have been looking to purchase a VFD for a drill press so am interested in this one. Does it run a fan when on but not in use? Any reason it wouldn’t be good for a drill press application?
I am in Tamworth (2340) so wondering if postage is possible and any idea of cost?
thank you
Ian

Ian,
Fan runs all the time.
Not wanting to put you off, but if you plan to fit it with remote switches and speed control I'm not able to walk you through that maze. However there seem to be lots of forum members who are good in that area.
Will check out postage to Orange and let you know.
Cheers,
Bill

Thanks Bill and Dave
I was hoping for no fan and do probably need a little more time to research how I am going to set up the drill so if Dave is keen I am happy for him to take it. If for any reason he decides not to then I will take it.
I really enjoy the forum and the generous nature of many members so I would be very happy if Dave has a project he can use a vfd on. It will certainly be next year before I take the drill press so I have time to procrastinate on setup a little longer.

Ian, I am interested why the fan is a problem or not? Most electronic devices run internal cooling fans these days, the Delta VFD on my wood lathe does and it continues to run for 20 seconds after I turn off the power.
Just wondering?
Rgds,
Crocy

Hi Crocky
My understanding is that this unit will have the fan running whilst ever it is on - even if the motor is not running which in a workshop environment starts to get annoying. If I am working for a few hours and this is on the drill press, so I am drilling from time to time over the couple of hours I don't want to keep turning the VFD completey off to stop the fan. I have a Teco VFD that is on a belt grinder and the fan only runs if needed and only when the motor is being driven, otherwise whilst in standby mode there is no sound at all. If I have this worng and the fan only runs a short time after the motor has been spinning then I am much more interested!

There is a video on YouTube showing how to simply add a cheap automatic thermastat switch on the fan if that helps.

If you are set you don't want it, as the fan runs I'll take it.
I was going to reply before you, but seen Bill didn't really want to post it.
I don't want to muck Bill around, so if your stepping aside and don't want it, I'll take it.
Just let us know for sure, as I'm not out to step on anyone's toes.
If your coming through muswelbrook it would be great to meet a like minded forum member, as I haven't found any people up this way, just rich miners.
I'm about 5 houses up from McDonald's ,which is not good with kids, lol

Thanks, I have messaged Bill.
Bollie ((Peter) on this forum just came yesterday from Newcastle to see me.
We keep in contact via messages and email and visit each other every get months.
I'd really like to meet you and talk shop, machining and tools.
I've had to downsize at the moment with space, but I am smashing out projects this year, so much so I haven't had time to post them up here or anywhere else.
I just started righting some up tonight, so won't be long.
Enjoy your home machining mate, hope to catch up soon.

I have only just caught up with this discussion due to being busy with other stuff today.
So I take it that Ian is stepping back from the purchase with a concern about the fan noise. To be clear, that's not why I am selling it, but the fan sound has potential to be intrusive and people have posted comments about that on the web, so it is clearly an issue for some.
Currently in discussion with Dave J and will advise if sold to him.

FWIW this is something I posted over on the woodies forum about VFD fan noise.
The readings are taken at operator ear height or 1m from VFD in the case of the DC VFD
Ambient : 43 dBA
Belt sander:
3HP HY VFD exposed to shed;
VFD Fan runs continuously
58 dBA
MW lathe:
1.5HP Powtran 160 VFD is located inside a plastic power tool case for protection with 12V super-quiet computer case fan.
The 160 fan only runs when the VFD is powering the motor
The 12V computer case fan suns continuously
44 dBA ie almost silent
MW mill
The 2VFDs: 1 x 1.5HP Powtran 160 and 1 x 0.5HP Powtran 130 VFDs located under/inside mill cabinet
The fans on both units only run their fans when motors are running
Cabinet vented by a super quiet small 240 V fan that runs continuously when VFDs are on
44 dBA ie almost silent
DP
1.5HP Powtran 160:
Same situation and setup as the MW lathe
44dB ie almost silent
WWBandSaw
4HP HY exposed to shed;
VFD Fan runs continuously
58 dBA - slight irritation
Grinders
1.5HP HY exposed to shed;
VFD Fan runs continuously
54 dBA - see comment below
WW lathe
1HP Powtran PI130 exposed to shed;
VFD Fan only runs when the VFD is powering the motor
No issue
DC
4HP HY exposed to shed;
VFD Fan runs continuously
50dB ie no irritation as I'm usually further than 1m from this VFD
1/4HP 1200 CFM shed extractor.
1/2HP used VFD - this unit has no fan at all.
no issue
Although its not the loudest the most irritating of these is the Grinder VFD, and this is probably because there's a faintly buzzing relay in the switching circuit.
I am slowly upgrading to Powtran VFDs but I am in no hurry to upgrade the existing HYs as they don't bother me.
