Hercus 260 long bed very worn project - Caboolture QLD
Regretfully I need to pass on my Hercus 260 I purchased it many years ago from Mendum machinery for $1000. It came from an engine rebuilders basement in Sydney.
This sale is not about money but passing it on to someone who will give it the attention it needs.
The bad parts well the bed is soft and deeply worn. I broke a part in the apron that holds the worm for feeding (long story) it’s on an old 9” workshop cabinet that’s been butchered to fit (because it’s a long bed) tailstock is still in bits (all bits are here).
The good well it has a new single phase Teco motor DOL motor start stop with contractor/overload and E-stop all up that cost $300 from memory. T-slotted cross slide is nice.
Comes with 3 jaw and 4 jaw chucks. 3 point steady
I got the lathe then had to put it in storage for a year then started cleaning it up when I had the space. The project dragged out until I got the chance to run it but sadly even if I scraped in the bed at the Gold Coast club it still wouldn’t be the lathe I need. I can’t keep it just for sentimental reasons it’s got to go.
Make a fair offer if you can sincerely tackle this project. I’m realistic as it is the lathe needs more work than it’s worth so the home it goes to that’s important

Bugger I forgot to mention the Turret is not for a 260 it’s a 9” workshop accessory centre heights wrong. I would like $250 for it sold separate to the lathe
More photos to come

I did read the rules mate but must have missed that I’m terrible with picking prices and haggling
I put the costs of the major items and what I spent on it so if I add that all up $1550 for the lot but that’s to much for all this
On the other side $200 will get every yahoo jumping at it and this poor machine won’t find a good home
So what am I to do? I have 2 Myfords and a mill to put up next

If the turret is available separately, I am interested at $250 plus post and packing.
If available, let me know by PM.
Regards,
Alan.

If it goes north and the buyer wants to do a rebuild, I could probably be persuaded to grind the bed cheep cheep. It might take me awhile to get it done though. (not years but a few weeks.)

If you could break up the machine & sell off the components to get $1500 or so - that asking price isn't too much.
For example if that 4 jaw chuck you have is a Pratt Bernerd 6" or 8" light duty (thin body) and in good shape, I'd buy it for $150 as that model suits my machines (non Hercus).
Doesn't take long to get to $1500 so I don't think a price like that for everything is OTT, IMO. And no, not interested myself (except in the chuck). Got 2 excellent small lathes already.

Hello,
I would potentially be interested in buying the complete lathe. I don't have the most experience with metal lathes but am trying to learn. Would there the bed just need to be re-ground, a service I see Australian Metal working hobbyist does. When you say it is soft would it also need to be hardened?
I actually turned my first punch on a 260 this week at a course.
Thanks,
Tom
